Rob has found a 1982 toyota truck-$139k miles.. 22r

What are the pain points for these? Anything specific to these we should check outside of the normal stuff?

You know about body rust, all the usual spots where moisture can get trapped. Frame rust, generally right about the area where the cab and bed meet. 22R is a strong motor and there is plenty of support out there for them. Timing chain guides are made of plastic and fail allowing the timing chain to chew through the side of the timing cover.

You can get a new timing set (chain and gears) timing cover, metal chain guides, oil pump and water pump for $149.00. I did mine on a Sat afternoon. Check all fluids including gear cases and axles if you can, tells you a lot. Smell all the fluids, burnt smell is not good.

Pretty stout trans and T-case in those trucks, easy to add a double case. Lots of aftermarket support for these trucks.

Axles and brakes are standard fare and most likely will need attention as will tie rod ends etc.

$139k miles..... that sounds expensive and low at the same time ;)

Ditto on what Stan said.

Also very easy to upgrade the rear to a stronger V6 version from the later 80's as well as V6 brakes up front.

I love the 79 to 83 Hi-Lux and have owned a few.

This is a great link, I've posted it before:

My bed rusted out, so back in 94 I build this trayback - see pic.

The tin worm hits these trucks hard, look for rust in the floors, body mounts, bed, etc. Other than that, one of the best trucks ever made.
