81 BJ42 - I have to bring it home and pass inspection

I'm designing a drawer to go under the fridge that will be a slide out kitchen. I'll post a screen shot of the CAD model mockup tomorrow.

So how about that CAD model? =)
 
Varty, the new one is better but I don't have a single picture of the build. Pete, for sure I'll be reaching out when the time comes. The gutter was fine. I was only lightly leaning on the tree and the gutters are surprisingly strong. Though I would not recommend leaning on them as a general rule. I slid into that position in the mud. Not in the hospital, just a lazy Saturday.


Here are some finished pics of the new bumper. This was done in a rush before heading down to Turf-N-Surf last November.

So the changes were:

- double shear swing hinge - the hinge pin is supported on both ends - top and bottom.
- to make the double shear and not loose departure angle I moved the lights into the swingout arms.
- all aluminum construction - the old one was pretty freaking heavy. It was 3/16" steel - this is 1/4" Alum.
- move the tire inboard so as to not repeat history.
- I used a set of door latches from a junkyard Tercel to latch the swingouts in.
- I chamfered the lower corners to add a little flair and not be so boxy.
- smaller tool box - the tool box was by far the most useful aspect of the old build while on the trail. no more digging through camping gear while looking for a snatch strap or clevis. The new one has only recovery gear and tire tools in it.
- single jerry can - one is really enough for this rig. The basket is modular and I can make it a two can basket pretty easy. Actually I plan to do just that with one diesel and one water.

Great bumper, I wonder how much more work to do like a half and half, half bumper and half swing out? Just wondering if you the lower part could bend up into the swing out if you hit a rock?

Still a rough drawing. I have to fine tune it some more. I want a front face for the drawer but it will have to fold out of the way for the stove to slide out. And I'm still thunking up how to layout the compressor/ battery and inverter you see at the front (right). I prefer the compressor inside the cab just to keep it clean. There will be a small tank under the rear floor to keep it from cycling too much - it's right behind the drivers seat. Lots of room in the drawer for my current kitchen kit and I'm adding a dutch oven and fire-cooking kit as well.

I did drag the rear frame/bumper over rocks quite a bit last time in Moab. Ripped off both tail light lenses and squashed the tail pipe (which then melted the wiring harness to the left tail light - diesel exhaust is HOT). But that was on the Rusty Nail trail which, though fun, is out of the norm for my trails. When the swing outs are closed and buttoned up I envision them being fairly tolerant of scraping over hard obstacles as long as I go slow and not slam down on it.
 
Yes, but the canvas is always the limiting factor. I have envisioned several different layouts for a flip top rig.
 
Have you ever seen anyone on mud try that or to have some sort of sleeping area in a 40. I am asking because I have thought about it with my BJ42.

There is a guy (pngunme I think is the correct handle) that frequents the 40/55 series forum that has made a bed for his 40 series. I think that he removes the passenger seat back, then puts in a wooden frame that spans from the passenger seat into the back. He travels with his dogs, and sleeps in his cruiser (he has named it "44"). He has a thread with over 1000 posts, so I didn't take time to search for details about how he made the bed. Cool thanks I will have a look. I was thinking more of the idea of making either a pull out tray with legs so you upper body is in 40 just behind seats and your lower half has support from tray with some legs on it. Then you have canvas from rear hardtop go over rear doors and sides.

I think flip top is cooler... If it could be done.
 
Slept in my truck all last summer, sometimes just threw a tarp over it...;)

I slept in my 42 last November for the trip to Turf-n-Surf and Death Valley. I just kept a 14mm ratchet in the passenger footwell and unbolted the seat each night. I'd invert it and put it on the driver's seat and just unfurl the bed roll. I kept my clothes bag in the footwell as a support.
 
I wanted brighter lights so I tried the www.superbrightleds.com website, which was quite good, but they were non-stocked on 24V clearance light bulbs so I hit ebay and ordered some offshore. I got the clear LED's for the front marker lights in yesterday and popped them in. I use these as DRL's (clearance lights would also then be on) and like'em bright but the incandescent bulbs seem to burn out weekly. Hopefully these will last longer.

The rest of my bulbs are at the Post Office ready for pick up on the way home and I'll check them out tonight.

The family and I just got back from a South African vacation. ........And also made me think that I should make some contacts in the places I might eventually get to. I missed out meeting up with a mudder in South Africa by simply not realizing I was going to be so close to his location.

Next time say something - there are a few of us on mud .... :cheers:
 
I knew all about you but wasn't going anywhere close to Cape Town so I didn't bother knocking on your door so-to-speak. What I didn't know was that Dagha Boy was very close to my path for a few days.
