Builds 81 bj42 build..... trusty rusty

Finally got my bolts from the platers today. They look good, but the sandblasting made them mat. Not the biggest deal, but I guess I should have just hot tank them and let the plater do the rest.

So now all the doors close properly! I had to take art the rear handle since I forgot to preset the lock cylinder, which was not allowing me to remove they key in the unlocked position.

Sneek peek: I managed to copy a rear vent cover! It may not seem like much, but it's taken a lot of work. I'm hoping to recoup some of the high cost by selling a few, but I have to tweak it a bit first.

Is that why they're not shinny? I thought my plater wasn't doing something right.

I'm in for some vents. Maybe 4 depending on cost. It looks great. Is it pretty sturdy? Left and right the same? You'll sell a fair number of those on this site.

I think it's because of the sandblast... some of the unblasted bits seem brighter. Could it be the pickling prior to plating?

L and R are the same part number. It seems pretty sturdy, but I will hammer one to see how it breaks. The overflow resin is pretty flexible, and I can squeeze it moderately in my hand without loosing it's shape.

Right now I just need to figure out how to de burr the edges quickly without gouging the plastic. It's a time consuming process: 15 hours to cast one piece with post curing. If demand is there I will make a double mold, but that's another day of work and a lot more money.

I'm having second thought about selling some vents. The deflection temp is 50 deg celcius. You can easily bend them back if you heat it up again to 50c,

Is that enough for the outside of a car? I know these were only for Canadian cruisers...

I could make them out of a different resin, but then it requires primer and paint.

any thoughts?

Leave it in the sun sitting on a vehicle and see what its like?

I need one of those vents, Toyota is outa stock...

Very nice BJ42..

Rob:Color would be close but not exact..... I'm having trouble making them "perfect", might be a little while.

Kevin: I would, but the hot days here are over for a while... we'll see. I found a post somewhere else where the owner mentioned his car got up to 60 deg. c in Arizona, so it's borderline.

What a great thread. You have some serious skills Ambrew. That cruiser looks friggin beautiful. Looking forward to the final pics. Good on ya. Real nice.

I have been scratching my head over the "vent". My BJ 42 does not have anything like you are talking about. When I saw them in the last photo I figured out what you were talking about. Seems the PO put reflective lights where you say the vents go. Maybe I will need a couple too. Jim

Andy, for the vents, I can see if I can get one into the temp chamber at work. I'll have to ask for the specs but we where testing plastic container to standard Canadian climats, so should be more then enough to test the vents.

My work has stalled waiting for a city inspector, so I'm getting a lot of cruiser time in! The bumper is made, I just need to grind out and re weld the shackle tabs since my 3rd pass looks horrible. Not too proud of myself there....

I also had the pleasure of fishing the wire for the courtesy lamp through the side panel / b pillar and rocker. Took the better part of 2 hours and some ingenuity, but I got it. Ended up using some metal pushrods from my old rc plane tapes together. What a pain! Also getting some tidbits tied up, like license plate hanger, tow hook and bumperettes finished. I skimmed some bondo on the bumperettes to get rid of some of the pitting, which doesn't look half bad.

Amber helped me get the side windows in, and I found that electrical wire worked fantastic. One shot and it was in.

Last pick is the tabs, that I messed up. :bang: I hate grinding but it will be worth it to have half decent looking welds on there...

As for the vent covers, I am leaning towards waiting before selling some. I would hate to put out an inferior product that I would just have to refund or replace in the end. I'm already close to 400$ into this thing, and will try the ones I have before pouring another 200$ to change material. That is unless demand picks up and I can cover the cost.

Does 100$ a pair seem over the top? I know it's a lot for 2 simple pieces of plastic, but it seems limited demand will keep production cost high. I'd love to hear opinions. I'd also be willing to trade for parts or cool cruiser stuff....

Anyone doing a restoraton should be happy to get those vents at that price...

As for the Canadian truck with out vents, prolly the old top was rusty and changed out for a gasser top?

Very nice work:beer::beer::beer:

I'm sure you're glad it's almost done. You'll need to drop by when you get it plated.
