I recently bought a 80 series Land Cruiser and I had various plans on what I wanted to do. when I change the oil and took the oil pan off there were tiny bits of silver shavings, plenty to notice. my local mechanic showed me and he said it could be the bearings, he said there’s nothing to worry about because he’s worked on Land Cruisers multiple times. Either I’m looking at a ls3 swap (if there are kits out there) or putting a turbo with a rebuild engine I can get from Toyota (short block). It’s apparently cheaper to buy a short block than getting the entire engine rebuild. The engine does purr and sounds good at 372,000 miles but worried about the metal shavings in the future because I’m planning some trips and don’t wanna break down.
Does anybody recommend me rebuilding the engine and putting a turbo on it or should I do an LS3 swap if I can find a kit for it?

Do the shavings stick to a magnet?

Run it hard for an oil change interval and check again.

What's your budget?

1) LS can be done cheap or $$$$. A LS swap can be more involved than what a mechanic is willing to do. More of a DIY thing.

2) A new 1FZ block, with all the bells and whistles, can be pricier than a LS Swap, but any good mechanic can do it.

An engine with 372K miles is due for a rebuild...

I did a LS swap and it has been great.

Can you be recommended to rebuild the engine? How many engines have you rebuilt in the past? And you need to consider what @White Stripe wrote. LS swaps are popular so there is plenty of info out there. Use the search button !

What is your purpose for the vehicle? How long will you own it for? What is your budget you're willing to invest into it? What is the cruisers overall condition besides the engine?
There’s no rust and everything‘s in great condition, I don’t necessarily have a budget, but I’m just looking for more power within the engine,. I’m planning on going to Alaska. I’m not really looking to making into a rock crawler more of something reliable and that can get me up different terrain and mountains Looking to have this vehicle for at least the next 10+ years.

I have a good running 97 with over 300k miles and debated a new OEM short block plus turbo for more power and reliability vs. V8 swap. I've decided to do a Gen V GM LT motor, hoping to get significantly better MPG than a turbo 1FZ. Cost of either one is about the same, give or take.

Well, it came to my conclusion after probably 25 hours of total research and talking to as much people as I can that an LS swap would be more ideal for me, but some of the companies can help install, but they are not budget friendly, I prefer to buy a kit and someone could help me install it, but when I tried to contact some of these companies, they don’t really sell the actual kits they just do the install.

@Cruisers and Co can rebuild you a engine and turbo for you in house! One

Without a budget given its almost impossible to help give any direction.
Well, realistically, if I did it myself, I wanna do about 15 to 20

I had originally called them, but they said they would call me back, but I assume it’s gonna be around 40 grand, I contacted TLC 4 x 4 which they wanted 50,000, Corsetti cruisers wanted between 70 and 90,000, I contacted Torfab and they wanted about 45,000. Cruisermatts around the same price but they were more helpful than anyone.

Ok. There are no full kits whatsoever. Nothing even close to that. There are various adapters and miscellaneous components that bolt in easier than from scratch. With that kind of a budget your going to probably go with a ly6/6speed auto, 5.3/4speed auto or LQ4/4 speed auto. All three options via buying a semi wrecked vehicle with the engine and transmission you need and sell off extra parts. This will be time consuming and mechanically intensive. Or rebuild the 1fz yourself which is a much more straight forward route. Another option is buying a good used 1fz and putting it in.
