80s as Daily Drivers?

I bought my 80 new in 1997. I have had it ever since! I use it every day as a daily driver and the occasional off road. If you like it and you want it, get it. I have never had any REAL problems with the car. Always did PM on it so I have kept it mostly stock. Don't go big unless you're gonna seriously wheel is my opinion. Stay under 33" and 2" lift.

The lady who owned my LX450 originally thought it was a fantastic DD, spent $68,000 to do so. She drove from Palm Springs to San Diego every week for a few years and loved it. She trusted it so much it was hard for her to replace. I don't know why you're choosing this truck for a DD if you aren't sold on it but drive what you want. Like any used car, baseline it and enjoy it. Ride can be fixed quite easily. I'm running TJM 50mm linear springs and Icon Stage 1 shocks and it rides like a dream. I paid $8,000, have about $20,000 in it now. I'm a fan. I wheel it lightly on the weekends and camp a lot in it. Beats the old Dodge Intrepid DD I used to have hands down. Drive it and find out for yourself if it's right for you.

Buy a 100, I have both and my lx450 is my go to for off-road stuff.
The 100 is so much more roomy and comfortable for DD duty and has more usable power.
That's just my 2cents

life is too short to drive boring vehicles...gas costs be damned! the 80 has soul and I love mine.

Going on four years of daily driving my 80. Round trip for work is 52 miles and it eats up the miles with ease. Yeah the gas mileage sucks but if I cared that much about it I would drive my Mustang more often.

I DD my 94, round trip 30 miles, have to fill up every Thursday usually (4 day work week), in the summer I will DD my 73 VW Thing when its nice out but other than that it's the 80.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. Let me clarify my OP. Didn't mean to imply it wouldn't be taken offroad. That's obviously a huge part of what led me here. I'm searching for a truck that can be daily driven for my commute, however, not one that's only good for wheeling.

Not one bit concerned about gas mileage, otherwise I'd be on ih8emissions.com.

My question is more for folks who daily drive partially built trucks. Is the time spent on interstates going to make it more trouble than it's wroth for the fun stuff? What issues do you run into daily driving the thing versus just taking it out on weekends and the occasional expedition?

Thanks again

I haven't read the whole thread yet...
When you say "wheeling" what do you mean, and how many trips a year will you be taking on it.

They are great vehicles, and rewarding to own, and enjoyable to be in. However, that's not what you're asking us, you're asking if it's the right truck for YOU.

One thing I will point out, is that if you plan on "building" it, or working on it, or doing pm on it... that you may be caught on Sunday afternoon half way done through the project and not be able to drive it on Monday. Many people who own offroad vehicles (disregarding how reliable or not) have more than vehicle at home, some have a sensible commuter car just in case. Not because an 80 is going to crap out on you often, but as i had said, if you're doing some work and don't get a chance to finish it, you'll still need to work on Monday morning- I have bicycles and another LC if I need.

My only real limitation that my DD use creates is that I need to keep the lift/tires/roof rack to a height that still fits in my home and customer office garages. I'm running 2.5" lift, Prinsu Designs rack and 33" BFGs and fit everywhere comfortably. The other limitation is having to remove shovels, axes, cans, etc. between offroad trips so they don't get stolen around the city but otherwise, there's nothing that holds me back.

I DD my 96 LC every day. My commute is about 14 miles each way. I don't get in a hurry these days (I used to with my old 69 Chevy 4x4 w/ 375hp)

I love the ride, I love the comfort for ME. My wife and kids think it's uncomfortable in all the OTHER seats. I put on 15K-20K per year and I drive it because of the off-chance that the Mall isn't available and I want to crawl somewhere else.

As I tell other: "It will take me anywhere I want to go......slowly."

When the LC is down for repairs, I drive my OTHER DD......a 1959 Studebaker Lark VIII 2DHTP. It gets better mileage.

I learned to slow down in it. After reading this post for the last few days, I have made sure to pay attention to the nice ride again. It really is. But I used to drive faster until I got used to how it performs. It likes to be around the 55mph mark. But if I am doing long distance, it will do 80 no problem. And still ride nice. Dunno if that will be the case once I put on the GeoLander M/T's

I don't know what all this talk about poor mileage is or the discomfort etc. I have a HDJ81. :flipoff2: Its fun, gets great mileage, its comfortable, Drives 70~80 all day long. Did Moab without issues. Drove across the continent diagonally. Its fun as fxxx!! Just get the Diesel and be happy.

Bragger!

Just hope that diesel doesn't ever break down... :flipoff2:

I have had mine for 8 years, and it's been my DD I put over 130K miles on it, would not change a thing great DD and fun vehicle 3" lift 33" tires, soon to be 6BT powered

I would think a 6BT is going to take a few inches off your lift? That is quite a chunk of iron!
