$8000 to spend on a 60....what would you do?

One more vote for the 80, or if this is really a wheeling truck, sell the 60, combine proceeds with your severance and buy/build an FJ40.

y'all are freakin' me out
I have a 60 because I wanted a 60
it seems like alot feel like they are stuck with their 60s, and want 80s
is that the fact? this whole time I thought this was an enthusiast's board; it sounds more like a survive with the crap 60 because you don't have an 80 board

I am seriously bummed

If you are not going to buy an 80, here is how I would spend it on the 60, assuming you want a wheeling truck.

Spring over- $3000
Toybox and tcase rebuild-$2500
Sliders-$500
Regear 4.56 , rear Aussie locker, front ARB-$2000
Used 35 inch tires $350

The more work you do yourself, the more goodies you can get.

Have fun, but now is the best time to acquire the skills for a future career. Good luck.

i don't have near the experience of a lot of you guys but IMO and 80 looks like any other SUV to anyone but a cruiser-head. Now there is something to be said for the fact that my wife can pick out a 60 a mile away but drive right past and 80 and think it's a 4runner. There is a cool factor in a 60 that will always be there and is only going to get cooler as that truck gets older. oh yeah, and no computer...in my HJ anyways - no offense to the 80's guys, i'll probably have to buy my wife one eventually

I have a midly built 62 (OME, 33s, Gears, ARB Locker, etc) and an 80, so I speak from a little bit of experience. Why not take an 80 or two for a test drive? The difference between a 60 and an 80 (FZJ) is nothing short of amazing. If the recommendations regarding an 80 still cause you to be bummed after driving an 80 or two, then go ahead and pour the money into the 60.

The thing is that the FZJ80 with electic lockers and a stock 60 are completely different rigs.

If I could choose, I would go the 60 route anyday.

First of all, the simplicity. I can tear down and repair any part of my 60 without any hands-on experience whatsoever, and I'm 17!

Secondly, the fact that there are so many easy ways to modify and customize my 60. Sure they might be expensive, but I can make my 60 look unlike any other vehicle that is on any road on the planet. An 80 still looks like an 80.

Lastly, the coolness factor. I will never see someone stare down a rust-free 80 with all the gadgets like people have done to my rusty-ass rig.

But then again, lets not make this another discussion between 60s and 80s.

For your $8000, evaluate whether or not the rust on your rig will jeapordize its long term usability. If it will, then fix that. Secondly modify the suspension. Do whatever you want, obviously you have alot of dough. Tires are included in suspension. Thridly, PUT A DIESEL IN!!!!

I'm done now.....

BTW, why does it seem that everyone who has a 60 wishes that they had an 80? Where's all the love? What about the "Why I love my 60" thread?!? I'm saddened.

seriously i would do soa with at least 35's and do the regear and the bars and rear bumper with swing away, winch etc. also long range gas tank would be nice. soundproofing, h55f/ theres just to much to think about right now.

i love my sixty. someday i might get an 80 when i have a girl i might marry, just to have for her leisure.

Don't be bummed. Guys with 80s really want 100s. :D

Spend $1-2K and save the rest. Always think long term, the $6K left over in a Mutual fund in 10 years will be how much? Always good to get a head start on retirement. As the govt wont be there for people our age!

You should be able to SOA or lift it and regear. (Find a set of used 35's or 37's. Which should cost $400 or less.) This is if you have a good running rig now. As always fix all maintnance issue b/f modding. (Something I should follow myself more often.)

If you do the SOA yourself or a fellow club member(s) help. Then you should have extra $ to do 1 other thing. (maybe get help for sliders to protect the rockers?

driving a nice cruiser is WAY more important than worrying about finding a job... think about swapping to a 12H-T.

Deisel, baby, deisel.

Do a simple SBC swap using the stock tcase and trans.
Dakkar or BDS 3" Suspension Lift
RB Body Lift 1"
34x12.5-15 TrXus MT's on black steel wheels
4.56s front and rear
Limited slip up front
ARB out back w/ tank for OBA
Sliders, bumpers
Winch

Not sure if that is doable with the $8k, but that is what I want on an FJ60 as a go (most)anywhere family wheeler.

back to the thread: compromise - spend 4k on suspension and/or powertrain (as they seem to be the biggest change in driving your rig) + the nickel and dime stuff that always comes up.
Stash the rest. It just feels too good to live below your means.

back to the hijack: I've had 3 80s, put a total of 210K on them, and love them, may still own one again. And yes, I have a 100 for the long cross country-then-wheel rig. But I love this 60, it has cool that the other two just do not. It is a trade between style and technical capability. It's not fair because I get to choose daily, not one or the other for good. But I choose that 60 every time.

Ummm - just remember that it is going to be taxed.

So you are looking at roughly $4k in your pocket. True you may get some back in April, but the tax man is gonna need his due...

Oh thats so true.
I actually had the choice of getting a 60 and putting 10K into her, or buying an 80.I went the 60 route becaues I like to work on it and make it just how I want it. There is no doubt an 80 is a more capable and refined LC but I still think OLD SCHOOL rules.

Not here, dude, I will *never* replace my BTJ62 with an 80 series (and you fawkers can quote me on that, although I don't discard the idea of a stable companion...he, he!), I love my old square wagon. But I have a lot more than $8,000 in it, have a personal connection with it that goes beyond financial and practical reasons, and I already went to college *and* grad school, my outlook is different.

You asked an honest question and we're doing our best to answer it honestly. For the money, you can't beat an 80 series. Best wheeling Land Cruiser out of the box, much newer, some great features, and to an extent, easier/cheaper to modify. The only real con against the US-spec 80's is that they're BLAH, no personality. They all look so generic and let's face it, there's something contrarian to the image of a Land Cruiser when the color name includes the words "Pearlescent Mica"! :flipoff2:

Wheezy,

Throw a sleeping bag and a few necessities in the back of that 60. It's your new home. Bring the $7,600. Stash the rest of your worldly possessions with your friends and family. You're going on a road trip.:bounce:

You're going to learn how to wrench on your rig, have some fun and entertain the rest of us.

I want you to make the rounds of the best cruiser shops and cruiserheads all around the country. You'll pay some with your $7,600 and spend a lot on gas but you'll really want to work it off as you go, pulling your own parts, wrenching yourself, learning from the best as you go.

Start a new thread here and tell us how it goes. See what kind of offers you get. Write up your adventure as you go and submit it to the Toyota Trails. We'll all help you build your rig and put you up for the night but be ready to work for it.

I figure you're set for a couple months living expenses and purchase of a few parts - or even paying someone to do the work somtimes. But you're really going to have to show a strong willingness to do it yourself while helping those who are helping you. It will be fun.

In a couple months you'll be flat broke, with no job and no money. So what!

You'll still be 26 and have your built 60 Series, lots of new friends, plenty of stories and you'll be famous!

Or you can pass this opportunity and be responsible. Going to work everyday for the rest of your life wishing you had more time than money. Right now you've got time AND money. I say do something crazy.

I'm sure I can arrange something for your build if you come through Pismo.

P.S. This would NEVER work in an 80 Series.

Damn....why don't I do that????

Oh yeah, I wouldn't get south of atlanta because I'm so frickin broke!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Do it now! Holy s*** that is a good idea. Good call pismojim. I wish that I could do that.

I'd say, depending on where you go, $600 for gas and $1000 for food/lodging/presents. Then you'd have $5000 for upgrades. That's alot of upgrades!! You could go SOA with 37's, re-gear, turbo your 2F, get a locker and then have some left over for protection. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could.
