80 vs Hyundai: How fixable is this?

My Cruiser is officially a total loss and I am very sad to let it go Paid my last respects at the yard when I picked up my plates and personal items. After being in an accident I decided I want something with too many air bags and such. So I'm not planning to hang on to my spare parts either.

Just days prior I had removed the bull bars (OEM), 2nd and 3rd row seats. If the insurance co doesn't want them I'll offer them a new home to someone here on mud. I also have a spare OEM tail light (left) which I didn't have a chance to install plus a bunch of misc plastic bits I still need to sort thu, if they're useful to anyone.

Thanks Dave, no serious injuries, whiplash but happy to walk away. The Officer on the scene told me if the truck had been just 6" closer to the curb it would have caught it and rolled over, maybe even crushing the A pillar and my Cabeza.

It really sucks the way the system forces out well kept vehicles because they're old, keeping it on the road so long as it's maintained is actually the far greener option to buying new.

I've heard this line so many times... it must be in the officer manual- I'm not sure if they're physicists...

This is just silly. As decoco said, there are so many factors that go into whether a vehicle rolls or not, that is an absurd assumption, even if he happened to be right. Also, the A pillar will NOT crush in and your head will NOT be crushed. That would take way more concentrated force than rolling over on flat ground can apply. I have rolled an 80 (1.5x) at highway speeds and the A pillars held up very well. I have also flopped on the trail right onto the A pillar and it help up just fine. Every situation will be different but to compromise the driver compartment (the holy grail of auto safety ratings) takes a lot of either repetitive or concentrated force.

That's awesome! I might have taken a few weeks off from the 80 series world, had to catch up! 60 pages of 'What did you do with your 80 this weekend' to catch up on!

A cop buddy of mine told me that this type of language is "cop speak" for "use this quote from me when you sue the other driver". Officers will say things like this that seem nonchalant at the time but aren't. They are leading you down the path...

When my daughter was hit this spring and she missed a telephone pole by about 18" going 35-40 mph, it was the other driver's fault. The officer said "this would've been really bad if she had hit the telephone pole! I imagine she is scared to death." I mentioned this to the insurance company when they low balled me to total her Camry. They gave me $2500 more for it and sold it back to me for $1000 less. Net $3500 gain.

Go drive an Avalon, you won't be disappointed.
They are also the other Toyota Flagship model like the Cruiser.
They are very refined, have 13 airbags, and a good reputation. I have had 2 last 250K+
Plus they are 268hp, and most are owned by old ppl so good ones can be found used.
The only downside is they are made Stateside.... (I could not find a single defect in mine)
The 2005 we have only gets 20-22 mpg in town, but I do not drive it Prius style. It gets 30-31 on hwy.

If you are looking for a car I will second the Avalon. My wife bought one about 3 months back after searching high and low for one. 2006 with 90K on it. Great open highway car, comfortable with all kinds of power throughout the range. Similar MPG as above.

In relation to new cars, no thank you. Do some research on the repair costs of new vehicles once out of warranty. The system is designed for you to run out and buy a new vehicle out of fear once the warranty is up.

Make sure that you get an agreed value policy for your rig if you have put money into it and want any chance of getting it back

Sorry about the totaling your cruiser. if you decide not to rebuild it, I would be interested in the seats you posted pictures of earlier. but would rather see you put a new axle on the cruiser and keep driving it.

Also my drives a Highlander and loves it as it has more room than our old 4Runner, and tons of airbags:

• Frontal Air Bag: Driver, Front Passenger
• Curtain: Driver, Front Passenger, Rear Seat
• Torso: Driver, Front Passenger

We got our highlander cheap in 2013 (2005 with 30k miles for $14k). It also has 230hp and gets up and moves and the new 2016's have 280hp...

So sorry but see this all the time in Europe, the authorities cannot wait to get the older vehicles off the road. I would put up a shout in the parts forum, point out what you may have for sale and see if you can get offers on parts? Then do the maths, if you can buy it back and sell on the parts then you might make a buck out of it, but perhaps more importantly you will help keep other 80's on the road.

This is the green thing to do - an old car driven is a new car not sold, and hence, not dug out of the ground and made. The 80 took a lot of steel, best to keep it running as long as we can, and keep that steel doing what it was intended to.

I'm actually not ok, tried to suck it up at first but getting T boned is no joke. Makes me think a bit more about safety.

I got hit by a truck last year. It wasn't a head on, but something on the longbed caught me and spun me around in the middle of the road. Insurance company advised me to settle for half the value or the case would drag on. I had to replace, front and rear axle, right radius arm. the right (that side took the brunt) side trailing arm was broken off the chassis and the front part of the chassis near the steering box had a small crack. It was just short of a write off. I am guessing if the adjuster had found some other damage discovered after the assessment, it would have been written off.

Been driving for the last two months. Hearing a few knocks near the front, but slowly replacing all the bushings. Drives like a champ now, probably better than before. It's not an 80 btw, its a Nissan Patrol GQ .

@LS1FJ40 we have actually taken our Highlander a ton of places off road, and I am not talking about just dirt roads. I'm not saying that you should take it on the Rubicon Trail by any means, but it's not limited to paved and dirt roads either.

I ran across this video showing an SUV rollover at relatively slow speed impact so I guess it could happen. Video shows a Ford Explorer with lower center of gravity than the stock 80. T-bone + rotation + curb = rollover.

Good option in a full size sedan but I love me a wagon. Believe it or not the Audi Q7 was a strong contender but that 3rd row was just too small

No new car for me, shopping used. I want 3 row seating and prefer something that rhymes with Land Cruiser.

We looked at 4Runners, Highlander is nice too but both a bit too small, (I know the 80 isn't huge) but 3rd row is kind of important for us. Sequoia is too big, LC feels just right.

What would you buy with the measly amount the insurance comes back with ??

Exactly, I've pondered replacing this truck many times (just as an experiment) to see what compares. Verdict: No results - There's no substitute for an 80 series Land Cruiser except another 80 series Land Cruiser.

2 months of recent pondering. Ultimately, it turns out I (we) really just want a newer version of our old Land Cruiser.
