Hello,

The PS pump on my HDJ81 is failing. I get a loud whine in the morning when i turn the wheel, when the oil is cold, a little better once it's warm. I don't see any obvious leaks and the fluid in the reservoir is not going down. When the engine is running, the oil in the reservoir spins very very slowly and I suspect the pump is on its way out. Before I replace it, is there anything I can do to improve it? Should I bother flushing? Or checking whether the reservoir is clogged? Can it be a bad hose (the low pressure feed and return hoses look fine, I can´t tell for the high pressure from the pump to the gearbox).
I'm looking for a replacement pump in case everything else fails but it's tough to source at reasonable price. Toyota's part number for the HDJ81 (and HDJ80, HZJ80), basically all the diesel 80 series is 44320-60170 (or 60171). But I can find others, for the FJ80 (93-on 1FZ engine), FZJ80 at a much better price. (OEM part number 44320-60181 or 60182) Anybody knows if they are interchangeable?

Any input is appreciated.

Thank you

Not sure on the Part number but can I ask what fluid is in there now? As I understand it, if there is PS fluid instead of hydraulic or ATF then it will whine in the cold like mine did. I had mine replaced because it was leaky and old too, but as I understand it a little fresh ATF or hydraulic with some downy does the trick. Not sure the logic on the Downy...but thats the word on the street.

I would try bleeding the PS system. That has fixed a lot of whining and moaning. With the engine cold and OFF, the front wheels off the ground and on jack stands, turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock five of six times. Check the PS fluid level, add if needed. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock. If the whining improves you'll know it was air in the system that needed bleeding, if there is no improvement then it's probably the PS pump. Bleeding fixed mine twice, but I eventually had to rebuild the PS pump.

I bled the system...with the engine ON (and the wheels on the ground)! I think it's a NO NO???!!! Didn´t improve. Noticed lots of air bubbles and fluid actually overflowing the reservoir, spinning slowwwly, close to none. Gonna follow your instructions to bleed again.
I use ATF. Best I can find (Mobil). About the downy trick, I'm scared. Would like to hear from someone who actually tried it.

Thanks

I have personally used the downy trick on a couple of different trucks and know several people who have also done it. It has worked every time for me. FWIW, the rebuild is not complicated(at least for the 1fz) if you are worried about cost.

as others have stated check the fluid type, also check the condition of the paperclip cooler - consider replacing with a heat sink type to improve cooling and fluid breakdown. I have seen it quite whine after replacement possibly saving the pump. there are a few write-ups on this to search for if interested

Hi I know this is late, I have an HDJ81 with 1hd-ft engine. When the engine is cold the steering works like a dream. However once the engine warms up after like 15 mins of driving, the steering gets stiff. If I drive for over an hour, and stop the vehicle, the engine stalls if its in drive or reverse and if I attempt turning the wheel.

Ive flushed fluids but don't know where to turn now. I do notice that the idle revs drop a bit when the engine is heated up .
