Tonight I was working on the 3rd row seat. The bar that goes across the bottom had come loose, so the seat was not latching to the floor. So my kids jumped up and down on it, trying to get it to latch. They ended up tweaking the frame to point where it would not catch, even after the cross bar was properly attached. I finally got it to where it would catch, but not sure if it will work as smoothly as before.

I remember looking around the back of the 80, admiring how well built the 80 is, then looking at the wear and tear of 18 years and lamenting that we can't get anything like that now. There is literally nothing on the U.S. market to replace it. I just had a strong moment of sadness, that I can't buy a brand new 80, I have one of the last ones that was sold in the U.S. and looking at how worn it was.

I have had my 97 (first sold March of 98) for 14 years and put 200,000 miles of the 240,000 miles on it. I have tried to take care of it, but with life and some tough times, I have fallen further and further behind. I have not done the head gasket yet, the motor leaks oil out of the top and a lot of oil out the bottom. Iron Pig told me to fix it I would have to redo all the seals on the bottom end as well as going through the head and replace the valve seals. The dripping feels like the ticking of a time bomb in the driveway.

I have put off rebuilding the 1FZ-FE, partly because of money, but mostly because I would really like a more modern engine+tranny. Something that is reliable, fits well, has a lot more power and gets better economy. I have seen several threads on GM V8 with 4 speed auto swaps, but if I swap a motor, I have to get more gears too. I applaud Ayra Ebrahimi for his efforts to develop a kit for V8 with a 6L80, but am concerned at how it sounds like he is struggling to make it fit cleanly, and unfortunately it sounds like the project is on the back burner. So I am planning on putting a turbo on the 1 FZ-FE, then rebuilding it.

My 80 is a daily driver, so I can't have it down for a long period of time to work through a swap, or even do major catch up work for that matter. I used to enjoy working on a project 4x4, but I absolutely hate having to work on something that I NEED to drive.

Anyway, just a lament that they "don't make them like they used to." I feel like the 80 was the best family 4x4 to ever reach U.S. shores. It was the best combination of capability with comfortable ride, with seating for 6+. I love having cruise control and full time 4wd, A/C is a must, but would honestly have preferred cloth to leather. I have hated Toyota that they never offered the U.S. the options they offered to other markets, especially diesels and the 105 series.

I was wondering if I will ever be able to get my TLC back to its former glory along with functional updates. It is almost like the bell is tolling as Beno posts to the thread of discontinued parts.

what sucks about these posts is that i just got my 80. i think ive been driving it for a week. now you guys wanna start getting sad on me! lol... i really wonder how this fits into my plan now. i wanted the 80 to be my "old work truck". i wonder if it will now.

i think i want to wait on my bumpers and sliders...

Enjoy the 80!

I test drove a few 4 door Wrangler Rubicons last fall. The salesman was an idiot and would only let me drive them around the block, even a used one, so I only got to take it up to a leisurely 30 mph, which killed any chance of a sale because I wanted to see how it would do on the freeway and climbing mountain highways, which is where the 80 struggles. While driving the Wrangler, I thought the 80 is still nicer inside and feels more solid on the road. I would much rather spend $35k on an 80 restoration/update. Like I said, the best family 4x4 ever in the U.S.

Mine shows its age, but I am amazed at how many 80s I see around town that still look almost showroom new. I guess if I had sense, I would find a super clean one to start over with. But this 80 is part of the family, the kids complained very, very loudly when I took a 200 series for a test drive with them. My wife cannot imagine driving anything else, it is the perfect compromise between 8 seats and being able to park and maneuver.

cool. i just came across two doomsday scenario posts in a close time. i hang out here. im learning whats what. im seeing whos who. its a pretty cool thing to see. i just wonder if my 332k 80 is gonna be with me for a while. i kinda want it to be with me til i can give it to my 2 year old.

I have had mine since before my kids were born, now it is only a couple years before they start driving :steer:

This is my 7th four wheel drive and my most modern truck. Drove close to 5000 miles in 10 days towing my expedition trailer last year and she's ready to go again and I was comfortable. Wheeled it on the trip too. Nothing to lament about. Just fix her up. Genuine gasket kits for the 1FZE are under $400

It's a shame they don't sell decent vehicles in america. My in laws got mad because I sold my 98 tacoma with 300000 miles on it to buy my 91 lc with 180000 miles. I couldn't make them understand that there were no vehicles that I could buy in the 5 to 8 thousand dollar range that would have the comfort, capabilities, and reliability of a lc. The wife and I spend a lot of time in the back country and I needed a reliable vehicle. I have more faith in my lc then I would in any domestic 2015 4x4 truck or suv.

Its impossible to look at my truck from the outside or inside and come to the conclusion that it has 334k miles on it. I constantly get asked about what year it is because it seems newer than it is. If something gets banged up I fixed it. I wash it a few times a year only and I have it waxed/detailed once a year. Its also been in covered parking its entire life. The paint is near flawless. Since I live in LA there is no rust issues. One quick trip to the coin-op and I can spray down the truck and the underbody.

If something is broken I fix it. If something is missing I add it. If I can't figure something out then I post a thread here on MUD where I get admonished at some point in the thread but generally it all works out.

I've considered other 4Xs to add to the stable. When I had more expendable income I even looked into getting the 200 series. Then when income dropped after losing my job, I considered the 100 series. But that was a non starter for me. I considered a G-wagen a few years ago to use as more of a long distance expo wagon for the less serious overlanding trips. But even that wasn't enough to sway me.

I'm stuck with the 80 series. I know a lot about this vehicle. I can fix nearly everything. I said "nearly" :flipoff2:

Do I care that it has 334k miles on it? Do I care that its 18 years old? Do I care that I will never own another truck like it? Not really. I have this one and I love it to death. I will be buried in it.

This is very true, and I've looked. There are some that drive nice but have no "soul". There are some that have tons of features but drive like ass. There are some that have powerful motors but weak in everything else. There are some that may tick a few boxes but could be a bear to work on as a garage mechanic if I wanted to...and I want to. I like to. I need to know the vehicle I'm driving.

Why be sad? There are plenty of specimens out there that just need a little love that have very little abuse. Heck there are a few of those that are parked a few blocks from me. I'm more worried that in 10 years all of a sudden the world wakes up and realizes just how valuable these trucks are and then it reaches the level of unobtainium kinda like the 40s.

I have had my 97 (first sold March of 98) for 14 years and put 200,000 miles of the 240,000 miles on it. Its always darkest before dawn. I've been in your shoes. I out off a headgasket for two years by using Bars Stop Leak because I didn't have the time/energy to tackle it. I didn't have the mental fortitude to deal with the emotions and frustration that goes into it. Then, one day, I did. And I'm happier for it.

I have put off rebuilding the 1FZ-FE, partly because of money, but mostly because I would really like a more modern engine+tranny. This is a personal thing not a practical thing. You can make a V8 work keeping everything else intact and it would work fine. The problem is you start down the rabbit hole. If I'm doing A, I might as well do B thru G. And since I'm there H thru N are just calling my name. That is what turned my headgasket into a $15k complete motor rebuild and upgrade along with a few bells and whistles and a Super Charger.

My 80 is a daily driver, so I can't have it down for a long period of time to work through a swap, or even do major catch up work for that matter. I used to enjoy working on a project 4x4, but I absolutely hate having to work on something that I NEED to drive.

Its my daily driver too. But you know how I solved that issue? I bought an 84 FJ60 for $1000 in Sacramento and went thru absolute freaking hell. But now I have my back up daily driver and I stress a LOT less because of it.

Anyway, just a lament that they "don't make them like they used to."

Prepare to feel that way about everything going on in life. It will be the new normal. "Remember when" will always be around to make us feel old and nostalgic. My grandfather was right.

The LC sales are pretty lousy in the states and worldwide. I can't imagine the LC line being a huge money maker for Toyota at all. But they still do and I'm happy for that. The fact we don't have the 105 or the diesel says more about being in North America and our appetites then it does about Toyota and their market demand fills.

I was wondering if I will ever be able to get my TLC back to its former glory along with functional updates.

It can and should and it takes people like you and me to make sure that happens

Eh, so what? Guess how many parts are obsolete for the 40 series or even 60 series. Yet guess what? We find a way. It allows 3rd parties to shine.

I've owned a G55, 100 Series, Sequoias, Tahoes, Expedition, and always drove my 80. Nobody ever understood why I would pic my 80 over every other vehicle I've ever owned. To them I say "You don't get it."

I've picked up two more 80s in the last month. I will slowly but surely work on one while I drive the other (one is for my son). I have had my 92 since new. I know where it's been and she's never let me down. 32 states, all over Mexico and Canada. The memories I have with my family because of her are priceless. She IS part of my family.

My two cents would be to do all of the maintenance you can to it. Drive it. Enjoy it. Make memories. She isn't going anywhere soon. Don't worry about circumstances beyond your control.

This is the 80-series replacement IMO. I don't like any Land Cruiser after 1997. Not even the 100s. They're no longer an SUV in my eye and look wrong with a speck of dirt on them. 5th gen 4Runners are new the 80 series if you want a newer version. Same exterior dimensions, better engine and yes, lots of cupholders for the yuppies :flipoff2:

There's already a huge aftermarket for them, even 4x4Labs front and rear bumpers. Nothing can replace an 80 but the new 4Runners come pretty damn close.

I had a 91 4WD 4Runner. It was ok but not a great fit for me. To be honest I never gave the 5th gens an opportunity. Perhaps I should.

I know some people don't like the predator front end of the 2014+ but I'm a big fan. There's always the 2013s with the less aggressive front.

5th gen 4Runners are pretty cool. I'd drive one if I had to.

They just aren't third world enough for me. :)

Ive owned more vehicles than I care to remember. Many makes and many models. I bought my first 80 about 7 years ago (bone stock), and still have it. I bought the second 80 a year ago and it is heavily modded and just needs major maintenence. I really like the new one. My daughter now drives the original 80 and she loves it (coolest car at school). Once in a while i drive it and it still is my favorite vehicle ever, even though it is just a (near) stocker. When she leaves to go do something, I always go to the window cause I love how cool it looks going down the road. I can't imagine life without an 80 ever again.
