Started out to replace the HG at 200K miles. Wound up rebuilding the engine entirely... :meh:

96, 197k mi, CBT $1800 with PHH & anything that looked iffy.

1995 origiginal HG still working fine, 265k Miles

1997 - 214K miles - work done by CBT - can't say enough about the job they did and how much power it had after new HG and re-mapping the injectors. HG,PHH,several seals, intake boot, and injectors $2200 ish. (sold)

1996 - 112K miles original HG

1997, replaced head gasket at around 220k as PM. My dad and I did the wrenching with lots of guidance from the 80 tech forum.

HG went at 252K in 2014. CBT did the HG and other things.. put another 100k on it since too!

I have a 95 with 209k on the original gasket, still going strong. I've owned it since 160k and the truck has not had an easy mile on it since. Lots of towing and heavy loaded trips. Im not worried about it going.

LX450 - head gasket was on the fritz for a while before the catastrophic coolant loss - 173K and a couple hundred miles

1997, 172K miles, original headgasket.

1992 3FE 235k, #2 cylinder

My 91 still had the original when totaled around 200k. My 93 let go around 238k. Replaced it myself.
But I think the 3fe should be in a different poll from the 1fz. It’s making the 1fz look too good.

97 LX450 replaced as PM @ 210k Desert toy did the job and feel I over paid my .02
93 FZJ80 still original HG and 197k
94 FZJ80 still original at 108k

If you don't mind divulging, what did Desert Toy charge for the job? I got curious and asked my mechanic and he says he does full 1FZ rebuilds for $4k. And I assume if the HG is a $2,500 job from what I've kinda seen around the MUD, that would make his full rebuild price pretty solid.

I would never buy an 80 that got a full engine rebuild from a mechanic, parts and labor and machine work for $4k, there would have to be a lot of corners cut, cheap Chinese parts etc. most people that rebuild the motor themselves have more than $4k in parts, plus another $500-$1000 in machine work. And then many, many hours of wrenching too.
