So, it's not all sunshine and rainbows when you buy a $900 truck.

I can't remember having a functioning parking brake on my truck, but it wasn't until a couple months ago that it came up in a safety inspection. Now I'm failed, and I need to get it resolved.

This being my first time digging into the rear axle, I have no idea what I'm looking at with the e-brake bits. The left rear drum gave me trouble, so in the interest of time (with rain bearing down), I just was able to get the other side off. This is what I found.

That explains it. I guess you need to have stuff like brake shoes and linkages for the brakes to work. Based on the amount of rust on my truck, I'd say it's equally likely that they simply desolved or some PO decided to throw it all away.

Look on the bright side!
The PO put the caliper and rotor back on!!
2X WOW!!

Prepare yourself for some sticker shock, all those little parking brake bits add up fast!

Could you trick the inspection guy by putting a line-lock in?

RockAuto has hardware kits and shoes for cheap. That would get you a lot of what you need.

I don't know if any of that hardware is the same on a drum brake rear (60 series) but I have one sitting here that I just pulled for my full float swap. If there are any bits that would work I could send you the entire drum brake assemblies from the 60 series.

The Rock Auto parts are very low quality. I ended up reusing 2 of my rusty brake shoe retainer pins b/c the RA ones weren't pinched enough to stay in retainers. The rest of the springs and clips and retainers were fine though.

Found a kind inspector this morning and got it done. He acknowledged the parking brake issue but wanted me to be able to go play in the snow.
