Hello yall! I’m torn between importing a gas fzj80 or the diesel variant. What’s leaning me more towards the gas is the accessibility to parts here in the states compared to the diesel. My question is for the diesel bros… How has the diesel been treating yall? and how do you get parts for the dang thing! This is my first post here so cheers! 👍

If you’re going to import you should go all the way and get a diesel. If you want a gas I think it’s easier to just buy a US cruiser.

Some of my thoughts here - there’s a few sources for parts mentioned:

Ugh. As someone who owns/owned both, i would say that gas makes FAR more sense in US from financial standpoint.

Don't get me wrong, a diesel (especially the 24V variants) are far superior in technical/practical terms. But considering the initial cost, additional maintenance costs (much more expensive oil changes, fuel filter changes, occasional fuel system service, diesel additives, etc), and most importantly the fact that diesel fuel is usually 20-40% more expensive than gas in most states, operating costs for a diesel are going to be higher.

If I were going to the trouble of importing one, I’d get diesel 5-speed every time. Yeah, they’re more expensive to own and operate, but they’re better. 😂. If I wanted petrol, I’d just buy a US market one. Way more available, much cheaper.

Price of diesel isn’t a factor given that I get up to 25 mpg with my diesel and was lucky to get 12 with gas. 🤷‍♂️

Diesel uses less fuel. Would partly balance out the extra cost per gallon
Oil change interval is the same
Sump is about the same capacity as 1fzfe
Filters, similar interval, similar cost
Oil, i don't see any major difference in cost.

People often say diesel cost more to run. I don't see a lot of difference

Diesel does use less fuel, true, but like you said - this is offset by the MUCH higher cost of diesel in US, so it there is no advantage there.
Oil change interval may be the same on paper, but most diesel owners (myself included) like to change oil on a diesel earlier, as it becomes very dark black long before the recommended change interval.
1FZ takes about 7-7.5 liters of oil. 1HD takes 9.5-10
Oil filters, locally cost $5 for the 1FZ filter and $50 for the 1HD one (for OEM filters)

Owned both. Diesel is what I drive today.

There is absolutely no way that an identical diesel truck would see double the gas mileage of a gas engine. ZERO chance of this being the case. I've owned 4 1HD-powered 80-series, and even more 1FZ ones.
On paper, diesel fuel has 40% more energy density than gas. Even if it was possible, hypothetically, to utilize every last bit of that extra energy, your 12mpg gas cruiser would get 17mpg with a diesel. In real world, however, you would be seeing around 15 maybe.

In fact, i highly doubt there is a 1HD 80 in existence that gets 25mpg. They were rated well bellow that stock, from the factory. My current cruiser is probably one of the most fuel efficient ones out there (1HD-FT, H152, stock suspension, stock weight, no roof rack, stock boost /w intercooler, everything in 100% condition mechanically) and i've never seen 25mpg from it even when doing 90-100km/h without AC..

I’d go diesel. I haven’t had a gas 80 but have owned an HDJ81 and it was fantastic. Excellent power, even at altitude, decent fuel economy (especially compared to my FJ62’s) and parts in general are not hard to find.

In my opinion the additional fuel economy from a diesel is more about the additional range than cost savings. The price difference between the two fuels usually about makes up for the fuel economy difference but you don’t have to refuel as often. I got 17-20mpg in a stock HDJ81, with it tuned a bit and larger tires it gets 15-18mpg and can easily cruise at 80mph. Last spring I took a trip with my brother and his family: we fully loaded the 81 and towed a small off-road trailer with two roof top tents and still got about 14-15mpg on the highway doing 70+mph.

Good parts are not significantly harder to find or more expensive than domestic models; if you’re paying $50 for 1HD-T oil filters you’re way overpaying. They’re usually in the $30-35 range. Oil changes can easily be on 5000 mile/7500km intervals with a decent synthetic oil, probably more.

If it's running stock boost, you can do better in both power and economy.

My 1hd-t and 1hz powered cruisers both used around 14litres/100km. 1hd-t was typically pushed harder, coz, well, it was fun to drive!

Fzj80 uses around 16.5-17 litres/100km.
That's roughly 20% less fuel. Close to making up your 20-40% premium for diesel.

All mine were 5 speed, all sort of stock, but with 33" ATs. 1hz had taller gearing.

Black oil doesn't necessarily mean it's not doing its job. It's typical of any diesel.
Run a quality oil, and the FSM recommended oil change interval is likely twice as frequent a it actually needs to be, unless you're driving in exteme conditions.

If you're worried about cost of oil changes, you could do some oil analysis evey few oil changes and figure out what a real world oil change interval is for your use case.

I haven't noticed that big a spread on oil filter prices.

If the OP is purchasing a hobby car, occasional use car, enthusiast's car or whatever you want to call it, there's likely far more driving the purchase decision than a small increase in running costs.

I bought my current fzj80 primarily due to the premium in purchase price for a diesel engine cruiser.
I paid $5k AUD for mine. An equivelant diesel model would have been $20k++ at the time.

There would be people getting very close to this.
On the defunct LCOOL Forums there were people adamant they regularly saw 10-11L/100km.
This is totally dependent on your right foot action. You're driving miss daisy to achieve this.

A 5 speed fzj80 is a very different beast to an auto trans version too.
Really don't know that I would tolerate an auto version.

The manual trans experience would be a big part of me weighing up a HDJ81 vs NA fzj80.
Hell, I paid a fortune to bring my Aussie fzj80 to the States because I wouldn't easily replace it with a manual 80 in USA

Diesel around here currently has an average price of $3.40 vs $3.10 for unleaded. Occasionally diesel will cost less than gas but I haven’t seen that in a while.

The range is a good point, I love getting 3-400 miles to the tank with a diesel. Really nice to not have to carry extra fuel or deal with sub tanks. With a sub tank you could probably go 800 miles without fueling which would be insane.

I used to get about 22 mpg on long trips in my hdj81 (1hdft, automatic). That was mostly stock with the tiny stock tires but it did have a 2” lift.

I agree with everything you said here. To make it clear, my current, and only 80 series is a diesel and i would not consider going back to gas for a number of reasons. However operating (and initial purchase) costs do not favor the diesels in US over a long term ownership period.

If it's running stock boost, you can do better in both power and economy.

Maybe. But it would come at a cost of long term reliability, which is completely unacceptable to me personally.

These are realistic numbers. 20% better fuel economy makes sense. 100% (like the other fella claimed) is impossible.

I agree 100%. However, running totally black oil on your beloved/treasured truck stresses people out (myself included), so changing it seems like a reasonable compromise.

I haven't noticed that big a spread on oil filter prices.

Maybe not in Australia, but in North America that is most certainly the case.

Price difference between FZJ and HDJ is comparable in North America, and this is exactly the point that im trying to argue here - if cost is a concern at all, then 1FZ makes way more sense. If you just want the best possible engine/cruiser, then 1HD is obviously the ticket.

There would be people getting very close to this.

Ugh. I don't believe it. I've seen many such claims in the past, but having extensive personal experience with 1HD's, i believe these claims are just cases of 1HD owners lying to themselves (and others), in hopes of justifying their poor financial decisions..
I've seen many claims of ~25mpg (9.5L/100km), and even some in high 20's/low30's (8L/100km+). This is just not physically possible.

In full agreement here.

This is highly unusual. In the east/northeast, diesel tends to hover around $3.50-4, and gas is around 2.50-3.00

Regarding range, yes, that's one of the big selling points for diesels. I have a sub tank on mine, and i can, indeed, squeeze 800 miles out of both tanks. If you're travelling long distances, this can actually save you a bunch of money as it allows you to avoid fueling up in expensive areas.

OK, I'm busted. Not identical trucks. The FZJ80 was many years ago, and reflected the tastes (bigger tires, muchos accessories) and driving habits (Zoom, zoom!) of a MUCH younger man. Current HDJ80 is all stock, 5-speed, no flares, no roof rack, no accessories, and skinny tires.
i highly doubt there is a 1HD 80 in existence that gets 25mpg
Mine does. Regularly. Repeatably. Distances checked against Google maps, speedo checked against GPS. You're free to ride with me the next time I go to Moab and see for yourself.

True.

More true.

Yes, it is. See above.

Where I am diesel is usually about $0.50/gallon more than gasoline. Right now prices are around $2.89 for RUG and $3.39-3.49 for diesel.

An 800 mile range is really nice! The most I've gotten out of the stock tank in my 70-series is 515 miles.

But back to the OP's question:
My question is for the diesel bros… How has the diesel been treating yall? and how do you get parts for the dang thing!

My diesel treats me great. No complaints. As has been mentioned above, diesels are definitely more expensive to buy, and if you want one in the US you'll need to add the cost of import, which only adds to the extra expense.

Parts are easy, sources noted above. May involve a delay when compared to your local NAPA.

Owned both. Diesel is what I drive today.

Would you say the diesel is a good daily driver?
