Alright so my dad and I picked up an 80 series LC as kind of a project car/my first car and one of the things we're looking at is the CAT Converters and I'm just trying to figure out as much as i can about them in general and again this is my first car so i apologize if any noob things arise in conversation

Being your first post, you should really do some reading. There is a wealth of information on this site, the best place to start will be in the FAQ tab found above. Then onto the 80 series link under that. Also the search functions is a good place to start. As for your cats, do they need replaced? Having problems? Are they heating up? How many miles? Just trying to figure out what you wanna know about them...

Alright thank you for the tip I'll have to start looking. Currently the check engine light is coming on and we took it in and had it looked at and they told us it was the CAT's and we double checked it and came up with the same thing. At this point we're looking at possible replacement and I can't seem to find anywhere whether or not welding is necessary to install these because if it isn't then we may as well do it ourselves and save some money on labor

What year is your rig? I think the 91/94 had side by side cats, the 95-97 had online cats. There are a few threads on people who installed an aftermarket flow through cats with success (such as a magnaflow). Do a search above and start reading, I'm no expert on cats, but I have read a little about them. I do know that OEM are big $! Hope you get things figured out.

I didn't catch where you are, but if in Cali, they have to adhere to CARB and damn near OEM standards to pass the visual inspection. Check with your local smog or exhaust shop for options. On my 1st FJ80, a 1991 model, with the 3FE, I got some stainless universals off EBAY. They worked just fine, but this rig wasn't ever in Cali and I don't think it ever will be.
