Greetings all,

Just brought home a 1996 locked 80. Desert Dune and Moon Glow. Has 128,000 mi, and I did not buy it for $5,500 like the other lucky *&%$.

I have already been doing my homework and been reading the FAQs and searcing the forum for information I need.

I just purchased new 02 sensors for both before and after the cats from oxygensensor.com. I have a CEL and pulled the P0141 and P0401 codes. I am not looking forward to having to mess with the egr or vsv. I am hoping that it just ran out of gas at some recent point, and that is part of the issue.

I think I am going to have to replace the universals, as there is a definite hum/whine when torque is applied. I also plan on replacing the oil in the diffs and transfer with Amsoil.

Another item on my list is to redo the knuckles. No visible leaking, but a bit dirty down there. I do not think it needs a tuneup, as I used half a tank of gas going 230 miles, about half through mountains in order to get it home. Looks like the head gasket might have been replaced, as the head is much cleaner than the rest of the block.

I am very curious about the flush vs. drain and fill of the transmission discussion. Anything else I should look at?

The lockers work, but it was quite interesting to have to wiggle it around on gravel to get both the front and rear to engage.

The interior is in okay shape. Am thinking about losing the third row seats. As is probably usual, there are a myriad of things I would like to do, but have to keep a watch on the finances. Cruisers are like boats to me - money pits. My 1980 FJ40 is the bane of my wife's existance, especially since she cannot believe that I actually drive it. She likes the 80 though.

Thanks for reading.

Congrats.
Sean

Don't assume the headgasket has been changed just because of the head color. The head is shiny silver aluminum and the block is dirty brown cast. As a matter of fact, don't assume anything unless you have receipts from the PO.

Welcome and congrats.

That's gotta be some sort of new mileage record, I get just under 300 for an entire tank.

Welcome :flipoff2:

I will throw some picts up when it stops raining here.

230 miles on 1/2 tank! Man, what would you take for it?

230 miles on half a tank .....

Your first order of business should be to replace your broken fuel gauage:D

Welcome

Sounds like you've done your homework on this... now get out there and enjoy spending $3.00/gal while you drive in luxury. (Im just jealous because we pay equivalent to $4.00/gal right now). At least you got a locked cruiser... sounds like a nice one.

Congrats! As for gas prices, lord help us when we all mosey to Cruise Moab in our 80s....

Dave

Now I am really paranoid. Is the damn gauge broken?

mine goes 200 miles on 1/2 tank...and the last 100 miles on the 2nd half...lol

believe it's just how the gauge goes, you should expect about 300 miles to a tank runnin the highway.

welcome :D

Congrats and welcome! You will find an wealth of information and help available here. :flipoff2:

yup, you better check to make sure it's not a Civic or similar engine in there, with that kind of mileage.... :)

welcome aboard :flipoff2:

wow 230 miles to a half tank. LOL i wouldn't be selling my 97 80 if that was the case.
