Do you remember what kind of Cat you installed? Is it a regular or a high flow?
Thanks

It's a Magnaflow 2.5 inch- high flow...same as the diameter of the existing pipes. My recommendation is find a small muffler shop that 'understands' the issue and is willing to work with you.

My exhaust system is in poor condition to begin with, so maybe a visit to an exhaust shop is a good idea. I can have a universal cat installed at the same time.

Won't running a cat wihout an O2 sensor and computer to control the mixture, result in a clogged cat eventually anyway? If so have them install the cat with flanges on both ends and make up a bypass pipe at the same time. Easy on and off. ;)

Potentially...however, I'm old enough to remember when cats were first put on cars and there were no computers or O2 sensors back in the mid 70's. It wasn't thought to be a problem back then as long as you ran unleaded gas. My 78 El Camino had a cat, 4 barrel carb, and no computer or O2 sensor, and the cat was good for 10 years and still on the car when I sold it. As for a flanged install, that's exactly the way I had it done... check the pics. $20.00 extra to have a straight pipe made up to fit the flanges. Six bolts and about 15 minutes and it's back to the way Mr. Toyoda intended.

Putting a cat on it might work, but it is a band aid for a carb problem that is still going to cost you in bad fuel mileage.

Claudia [dsrtrdr] told me when she took her 71 from Nebraska to AZ, she had to start smogging it again. She said they were going back to 1966!
Howdy! First year for smog check here is 1967. I know that 76's run on the dyno AND raise the hood for equipment check. I know 74's do NOT have to raise the hood. I don't know about 75's. Check the AzDEQ or AzDOT websites for more info. John

carb addition in CA

Seems to me that if the vehicle came from Colorado (translation: high altitude), it would have been jetted down, not up??? During 1998-99 when we were testing 1985-87 FJ60's (attempting to get our TBI kits smog legal) 100 percent of the emissions equipment on those test vehicles was already shot. Merely putting on a fresh Cat cleaned them up sufficiently to pass a tail pipe sniffer (warm engine) test. If all of your emission equipment is intact (translation: able to pass visual), then a fresh cat might single handedly get you through???

I'm a newb with a 78 FJ40 sitting in the driveway for the same reason. AZ emission trouble? Try Berkeley!

I've been looking into engine swaps (Toyota 1UZ-FE) and ran into this, BAR. For CA members check with a DMV referee before adding a cat. Rules changed as of Jan 1 this year.

No used cats and "The catatalytic converter will be installed on a "1-for-1" basis (a new converter is installed for each OE converter being replaced). Decreasing or increasing the number of catalytic converters (compared to the OE configuration) is prohibited."

A friend got a PO Box where he hunts to register his Jeep and his wife must have been on the registration too. She was pissed when she was summoned for jury duty two hours from her home. Jeep is for sale.
