Has anyone had a challenge removing the starter from your 40? Mine went out and I’ll be dammed if I can’t get it off to rebuild/replace… seems like there is no way for me to get a socket or wrench on the bolts to remove them.

Any ideas? Feel like I’m missing something…

You trying to remove from the top of from below? Splash guard removed? I've always done this from the bottom. I used 1/2 sockets and breaker bar to break the bolt and nut free. I strongly recommend cleaning all the threads before installing the starter. Holding the starter in place with one hand you don't want to be fighting threads with the other hand.

Tried both, with splash guard in place.

If you cant get a socket on then take a cheap socket or wrench and put it to the grinder to relieve some of the outside on one side until it will fit.

I dont ever recall having to do that for a 2F starter but I've done similar things for other tight locations on vehicles

Be sure to hit it with pblaster/similar before trying to torque that ground down socket/wrench

Is the splash guard covering any of the starter? Not around my 10/76 to check the splash guard size. I know my early F engine splash guards are in the way of removing and replacing the starter as well as access to the bolt and nut. I use socket extensions that reach past the starter. With a 1'/2 drive breaker bar I have no problem getting the starter loose. I also removed the starter threw the bottom. Splash is in the way.

Did you test the new starter with a set of good jumper cables before you installed it? You can use a jumper cable from the + post of the battery right to the solenoid connection on the starter while its on the engine. Clean the battery terminals. Use the battery terminal cleaner tool and then use the battery terminal spray protectant. I just use baking soda solution for the cleaner. I like the heavy duty cables 2 "O" or bigger with cast on lead terminals.
