I found a good deal on some jump seats.. will these work for a '72? The pic isn't the best, I will try to get more from him later and update. I think some year jumpseats are different than others?

Do you have a roll bar? If so, fit might be compromised.

On my 71 it has a homemade roll bar with a wider section between the upright and the support (area where seat goes) so the wider jump seat you have in the picture works. The only mod I had to make to get in there was to cut off the arm rest, I did not feel it was really needed.

So you are saying these are the wider jump seats? And if I don't have a custom roll bar they will bolt in?

Yes, those are the wider version that are found on earlier years. I don't know the exact year they went to the shorter version but it was due to the roll bar that was introduced. If your 72 does not have a roll bar in the rear then they will fit if it does have the roll bar then they will fit with slight modifications.

72 and 73 are different than earlier jump seats. The bottom part of the seat is angle on the front side. These don't look angled. Also these look to have two holes at each mounting point. The 72 only uses one. Probably 68 or older. If they don't have the small bracket to bolt to the top of the tub there are even older. They will work but are not correct for a 72

The short version started with the 74 , when the rollbar was added in the US market. Other markets got the longer jump seats for years after that.

The 40 didn't come with a factory roll bar until 74 or 75, thats when the rear jump seats got narrow. The rear jump seats were the same from at least 67 thru 73. As a result, if you have a non stock roll bar the long jump seats won't fit on the wheel well as desiegned. If you have a later stock roll bar you will need the later narrow jump seat as well.

Is there an option for wide seats and a rollbar?

I like having room for seven but I don't like knowing my kids are going to get tossed in an accident.

If you care at all about your children's well being in jump seats...don't put the seats in your 40 or don't let your kids ride in the back. Bottom line. If you are in doubt, YOU ride in the jump seat and have the driver take a quick turn or two..........

Hey when I get the other pics could you take a look. Sounds like you know a bit about the seats. See if they are the correct ones or not and maybe what I would have to do to make them work. Thanks everyone for the input

67 thru 73 were not the same. I know of at least five different versions of long jump seats in FJ40s imported to the US. The 67 had the third and the 73 the fifth.

72 and 73 had a different bottom seat size the rest were how they mounted. The 61 had two arm rests like the FJ25 just lower.

It's when I roll it over that has me worried. Might be nice to have shoulder belts too. Aw hell, I suppose I should spring for ANY seat belts first huh?

When my kids were young I installed a early bronco seat in the back. My youngest is now 25 so there weren't as many options as there is now. I also installed a heavy piece of angle iron from side to side behind the seat. Bolted that to the frame at both ends. All the seats belts were bolted to the that angle iron. I used good case hardeneds bolt and heavy fender washers to anchor the seat. Safety was always first. You can always go back to stock later.

Just my .02

2x on the early bronco seats. I put one in a 72 and it was a nice fit. I didn't have any kids at the time but the dog liked it.

Thanks John. I've kicked around that idea. I've got two boys and a little girl. I'm thinking of a rear seat in addition to the jump seats. I'm all for bolt on mods but I suspect I'll be fabbing my own bar, and probably making/welding another set straight to the bar (shoulder belts are easy at that point).

Will short seats and a factory bar bolt into a 63?

Thanks, and sorry for the hijack.

I have a 71 with Man a Fre rollbars and I bought some jump seats, the longs ones and put them in without a problem. I got a kit from SOR that has little C brackets for extensions to help bolt it down but haven't used them yet, or figured out where they would go...no directions came with them. I have the bottom part of the frames bolted down but not the backs yet. Here are some pics...there are 3 points of contact on the bottom but none on the back...so that's why I didn't fasten the back I guess. The passenger side has an issue with the one leg not reaching the wheel well so I thought maybe the bracket would go there but its not that big of a gap. Then I thought I was suppose to use the bracket to attach the back of the seat to the tub because there is a hole on the tub in the right location but no hole in the tube of the seat frame. Also look at the angle of the frame compared to the roll bars, it is bent out away from the tub to allow the for the roll bars, but I don't know if the PO of the seats bent them like that to make them fit in his fj40 or if they come that way. The PO said his came out of a 71' with roll bars...even sent me a pic. I noticed this in the pic he sent me(yellow cruiser, circled in Red) an attachment point to the tub but I dont have that part and my tub don't have the little clips to accept the part either...so don't know. Hope any or all of this helps. My next move is to install seat belts for the back but don't know the best place to mount them, also I'm going with lap belts because I'm thinking a shoulder belt might choke them if they get a forward trust...i.e. hitting the brakes hard. And a pic of my buddies in the cruiser...one adult per seat, two smaller kids per seat. My kids are 14,13, and 11, and its tight with two per seat for them.

The longer jump seats attached to the bed rails. There are captive nuts. Guessing those SOR spacers are used there to space the seat out to clear the rollbar.
I am in the process of putting some short seats in my 69 with a late model roll bar.
Fabbing brackets to use the existing captive nuts for the upper attachment. Ill post some pics when I get one done.

If they don't have the small bracket to bolt to the top of the tub there are even older. They will work but are not correct for a 72

I just received some long jump seats, took out my roll bar (not original on '62 FST) and am looking to install them. However, these that I have do have the small bracket to bolt to the tub. Question is, how do I bolt these? There are no holes in my tub? Are there wide, short, sheet metal screws or something similar for this?

If anyone is willing to show me how their's are installed, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
