70-series + 80-series = 15x-series??

So over the last six months I have picked up two x3 locked 80-series Cruisers with bad motors. One is probably to nice for a Frankenstein build and will probably just get a motor swap. The other though is not.

In a month or two I am headed down to Latin America to hunt for some new Cruisers. I already have a line on HZJ75 pickups and Troopies that are not worthy of import (due to condition) but are worthy for a build. One, a 1992 HZJ75 Troopy is an ex-government truck recently taken off the road. It is in the initial stages of being parted but I could buy it as a complete truck. The body is solid besides some minor dents. The interior needs a refurbish. The rest of it I can easily part out.

Just for the record, I have done an 80-series chassis swap before, here is a link to that build.
FJ60+62+(Z)80+ v8

I also come across a number of HZJ75 pickups not worthy of importing to resell. And then there is always the occasional HJ47 p/u, 4-door Prado, 73-series and so forth. I do have sources for new 76/78/79 take off bodies and also TD engines such as the 1HDT or 1HD-FT and of course the 1HZ is readily available to me. I am kind of leaning towards a 1HZ that is turbo and intercooled.

So, I am thinking a HZJ75 Troopy on the 80-series chassis with a turbo'ed 1HZ.

Thoughts!?

Cheers

Your builds are always top end quality... looking forward to your next project.
Are you back in the USA?

Thanks!

On and off. Been here since September but going to leave for three months or so this spring. The build would be much later this year, maybe not even done by the end of the year.

These locked 80's are a dime a dozen if you don't care about anything but the chassis and know where to look. Seen a 3rd this evening for dirt cheap. :grinpimp:

Cheers

Year I believe the 80 series has bottomed out since most is over 200K now... in fact 150K is considered low mile ha ha
I will build a fJ45 body on a 80 series eventually.

So, I am thinking a HZJ75 Troopy on the 80-series chassis with a turbo'ed 1HZ.

Hzj75 with turbo'd HZ can struggle to shed the extra heat from the cooling system.
Narrow front end means a radiator that is marginally too small.

1HZ's Achilles heel is the head. The pre-combustion chambers/indirect injection retains a lot of heat in the head. Turboing can exacerbate this.

If you turbo the 1HZ, use a modern aftermarket turbo the will give boost at very low rpm, and give high airflow. If you're going to stuff more fuel into the HZ, you want to stuff plenty of air in too to keep combustion temps low.
Also, plan on an intercooler of some sort. Front mount air to air

The big mistake people make turboing HZs, is increase the fuel for more power, and only run a small amount of boost to "keep it safe".

If you're not a diesel guy, forget everything you know about turboing a gasser. Diesels are a whole different kettle of fish, tuning and and turbo requirements are completely different.

Heaps of info on this in the diesel tech section

75 body on 80 chassis works well off-road. Body is a lot narrower, and no 80 series fat ass to scrape on trees, rocks etc.

I am a diesel guy and spent a lot of time working on and modifying them. I am well versed in intercoolers, oil coolers, correct working cooling system and not just cranking up the fuel and boost.

Thank you for your input though, it is valuable info.

You might ping @AutoCraft Aus about a 7x Series cab/trayback built on an 80 chassis that he built for an Aussie friend. Turboed LS IIRC and Full pop Slinky setup. Ive only seen pics and few vids but it looks like a killer rig. Would be a cool way to do a 7x Series.

Edit: only pic of it I've been able to scrounge up.

Any info out there on 3UR swaps? I have got a chance to grab a side impact 200 with 15,000 miles for a reasonable price. I also have a wiring genius who could figure it out, I am sure.

Cheers
