Maybe I'm getting old but have had several cummins trucks , currently have a 12v in a gmc, they are loud and shake,
If you plan on driving it a lot the noise will drive you crazy after a while, I have 3 layers of dymat, and spray foam in the gmc just so I can talk on the phone, remember the 6bt was a case tractor motor, they have come a long way since 1985, in noise and vibration..

I love cummins motors but if you are going to do a swap, spend the money and do a qsb 3.3 or qsb 4.5, a lot quieter and smoother, some of the 3.3's even have ballance shafts..( don't know which ones).

You will be a lot happier and enjoy driving it more...

i'm still on the fence about the motor. I turned down the trade on the 6bt, i will still consider the 4bt or another 4bd1t swap. I've heard that balancing the bottom end of the 4bt helps a lot. I may consider doing just that.

In the end noise factor doesn't really matter....if it did i wouldn't own a 40 to begin with.

picking up axles and transmission for the build this week.

Once i adapt the t170ft (RTS) to the land cruiser 3 speed case and adapt a SBC bellhousing to the front of the transmission i will go from there.

Don't have pics handy but I have looked at a few 45's set up with 6bt's. One was sua, but I could see oil pan clearance was not good. Non-intercooled earlier 6bt's though. Other than that they looked good under the hood. Not so different than how they fit in a 60 or an 80

Those look like some well put together rigs. I'm curious if it is all Dodge engine tranny and t-case.. I think that is the way to go aside from having a centered rear output..

It looks like a body lift was utilized as well.

can do that with any SBC conversion...binderdundat. Sucks when you have to hit the brakes and you have drums all around.

The little lady just picked up my early xmas present for me today and delivered a ford Tremec RTS overdrive transmission.

3.25 first, 1.92 second, 1-1 third, .71 forth, 3.25 R

Will drive about like an H42 without second gear but with overdrive

That puts me at 65mph at a hair beneath 2000 rpms on my 32" tires.

would be perfect for a cummins rpm range/comfortable cruising rpm range...and there is plenty of room for an I6 diesel under the hood....even running the stock radiator!

I would bet a pyro meter would be useless on an 6bt in stock form in a 40.

It looks like they are also using unmodified heavy lift springs ...has me thinking

The main purpose of my fj40 is my daily driver. Other than my cb550 it's my only mode of transportation

I DD mine too. That's why I chose a 5.3 out of a 2002 Chevy Avalanche. Lighter, more power and very efficient. Parts are very easy to find at local part stores.

I also have a SBC...but after owning a diesel cruiser I miss the MPG ...the sound and the diesel torque

I would do it. I have put 6BT's in lots of things folks said they couldn't fit in and they all worked great. I had a customer get a speeding ticket in a an old snubnose dump truck with a 12 valve in it. That old truck had a much smaller engine bay than a 40 does.


I don't understand how anyone can make a blanket statement statement that 5.9 Cummins engines are loud or shaky. My DD has a 93 5.9 Cummins with 306,000 miles on it. It's smooth and very quiet and gets 21 MPG average in a 6200 pound truck. I know dozens of others who own and DD 5.9 Cummins powered trucks, including folks who bought Dodges brand new just because they have that engine and they still drive the trucks every day. Yesterday morning it was 9 degrees here. My 93 started instantly, no grid heat and no block heater.

The 98-02 5.9 Cummins engines are terribly loud. They have more stock power than the older mechanical engines and they have dynamic timing and can run tuner boxes, but they don't get very good mileage overall.

It's almost 2014 now. Commonrails were put in Dodges in 2003. I don't know about the rest of you, but I find complete commonrails from wrecked Dodges are pretty easy to find and not that expensive. I'll be putting a 6.7 in an 80 real soon and the engine and everything to run it was not a big expense. I've spent a hell of a lot more on a 4BT in the past than the complete 6.7 with 40K was.

I would use a 5.9.

That shows that loud and shaky are subjective.

"very quiet"? Come on.

A '93 cummins makes a '93 6.5 GM td sound like a Honda Civic.
