the cracks in the steering wheel are probably of greater functional concern than the chipped off black paint on the emblem

i found a video on youtube on how to repair the cracks. how do i polish everything else?

I would say all cracks in these old steering wheels are cosmetic, there is a metal bar inside that will not crack. I plan to use pc7 on mine, seems to be the most popular epoxy to fix these old style steering wheels. I am also interested on what to do with the center part.

I did a quick resto on a '68 Wheel Horse garden tractor a few years back . The steering wheels on these crack from being outside and are known to fade badly, this one was almost a chalky white . Sanded it down with 400 grit, repaired a couple of cracks with epoxy and tried to polish it . No luck, tried several types of polish and even stuff specifically made for plastic and the best I got was a dull semi-gloss gray . Just for grins I shot a coat of Eastwood's Diamond clear on it , dumb thing looked new ! 2 good coats and this is what it looks like -

I wish the overall paint had turned out as good as the clear coat on that wheel.....

Those of you who have painted your steering wheels, how are they holding up? I'm afraid of the paint chipping since the steering wheel material is somewhat flexible. I've considered painting mine with rubberized paint after I fix the cracks, but even then I'm concerned about durability.

inquiring minds want to know....has it spent the last few years outside still? is the pic recent or right after you refurbed it and, if so, does it still look as sexy?

if it still looks that sexy, what epoxy did you use?

I used Eastwood's epoxy although not that impressed with it . A decent epoxy should set and cure quickly, this stuff took two days although it was pretty humid outside . The tractor has spent a lot of time outdoors including 3 months this spring in the nasty weather awaiting a serious garage cleanup by her owner. The pic is from a month after the wheel was finished, and yes it does really look that good today . I'm considering using the Diamond clear on a lot more things when doing the Cruiser this summer. I figured within the last 3 years the clear would start yellowing or start looking chalky, but it hasn't yet....
