The measurements of the 62 clock would be most helpful.

I picked up a 62 series clock off ebay...

...which by eyeballing will fit in the empty clock hole on my 84 FJ40 (BJ42 Console pictured, but it's identical) -

Anyone done this install and can confirm if it fits?

I'm guessing some wiring shenanigans are necessary to get the internal clock wired always on and the display on when key on and brighter when headlights are on.

If/when I do the install I'll post the details here.

Wiring

Got the clock in, and since noone in the 40 or 60 forum could help, it's all hacking from here.

The clock has 4 terminals, labeled:

L+ D+
GND C+

I guess there'd be a ground and 3 power sources.

+1 for constant power to hold time
+2 for power to shine when the car is on
+3 to indicate power to running lights to shine dimmer

I googled around and found this wiring diagram for Toyota clocks on autoshop101.com.

No mention of L+, D+, or C+ here, so correlating the physical locations gives this:

1 - GND - Ground
4 - L+ power to shine when the car is on (from 15A CIG/RADIO)
3 - D+ constant power to hold time (from 20A DOME)
2 - C+ power to running lights to shine dimmer(from TAIL FUSE)

Testing now to see if I'm correct...

So I was wrong, and the wiring diagram has the terminals in positions other than my clock, but with a little intuition (and a live 12V feed) one can make sense of L+, D+, & C+

C+ = Constant power
D+ = Drive
L+ = Lights

Terminals identified, clock is working, now onto fitting issues...

One Banana

So the lights are figured out, now the fitting.

First off, the mounting holes are 5 mm wider than the clock bracket.

Second, the clock bracket sets the clock back about 3 mm too far.

After contemplating drill-out of bracket, fabricate & reweld, I went the easy way and bent the clock brackets at the spot weld and voila - it fits.

Next, the brackets positiion the clock about 5 mm to high. I just cut out the screw holes and lookie there, it fits.

Clock Project Finished

Well, I'm out in the truck trying to find out what the mystery silver box behind the air duct does, and in tracing the wires see a 4 wire plug hanging loose behind the ash tray.

Mystery Box:

Free Swinging Plug:

Hey, that plug looks alot like what goes into the back of the clock, and it's in the right place.

So, I run down to the basement for the multimeter and the clock and back up to the garage. Run tests on the plug and sure enough it's for a clock that was never (to the best of my knowledge) installed in the FJ40 (was in the BJ42LX in Aus., but that is a diesel with a different harness).

Anyhow, pulled the block-off plate, mounted the clock and plugged it in and there's now something to drain the battery - probably will wire in a switch on the power wire for times when the truck will be sitting a long time.

Yes, I was finished at 12:11 AM - but still aven't figured out the Mystery of the Silver Box???

From what I can read the silver box says LUCAS, made in england. That means it is there to cause your headlights to burn out, your ignition system to fry, and in general, to cause random, intermittent, and untraceable problems throughout your electrical system.

American P., I like your ingenuity! It would be nice to own an 1984 FJ-40 with that dash.

If you are swapping a B3 your electrical system will be 24v you will only be able to run a hot wire off one battery all others will be connected 24v

Is the mystery box some sort of fuse box? Across the top of from left to right are nos. 1-4 and the bottom from left to right 5-8. Also it looks like in the middle iw "12V"?

Have you tried disconnecting any of these leads? Also what kind of aftermarket accessories are you running?

Great clock install by the way. Very clean.

the truck has a plug for something wired off the lighter which passees through the mustard switch under the lighter. it had once a rotating yellow light i believe ran off that.

it also has an air compressor with a lighted indicator and an additional light for oil pressure.

anyhow, now that the clock is in and the wife and boy are napping, i'll be running out to trace wires.

it was an easy install - the plug and hole were there, and i got lucky on the clock. i have a spare late model 40 series dash-plate that'll be going for sale soon so someone else can know what time it is!

dude! 4:20! Fire one up.............

Mapped the wires on that box and traced the output to the trailer light socket labeled 24V.

I guess that means it's a 12V->24V converter, Lucas 3317 12V 1282. I'll contact Lucas to see if I can get specs.

For those interested:

Position 1 - lead from flasher L terminal
Position 2- GB output (left turn)
B output to currently unknown
Position 3 - Brown output to 24V socket
Position 4 - GB input (left turn)
Position 5 - GW input (brake light)
Position 6 - GY output (right turn)
L output to currently unknown
Position 7 - L output to 24V socket
Position 8 - GY input (right turn)

Thanks for the insight and help. I was having a hard time with the FJ40 clock prices and wondered about this. $50 for this clock was much easier to swallow.

Luckily I had the female plug already behind the dash and amazingly it worked. Bent the brackets and drilled the hole like you and I can tell time.

Thanks!!
