Hey guys. I have searched here, not too much action in the 4runner forum. I am thinking about getting one. I have a line a a 2017 Limited. I like the color and the leather seats. This will be a DD not a wheeler. I know all wheel drive but my Yukon Denali is as well so that is that. Anyways. What are your thoughts on options, suspensions, etc. What do you wish you would have gotten or wish you did not. I might do a small level/lift kit for looks but not sure. I know they are not "powerful" but oh well. I am not too concerned with age/year, may order a new one. Let me know your thoughts!

My other option is a Subaru Outback per Gary S. He loves his!

I have a 5th Gen 4Runner and I absolutely love it.
Specs: 2018 Super White TRD Off-road Premium with KDSS.
Suspension: ToyTec Aluma Series 2.0 with SPC Upper Control Arms.
Tires: General Grabber ATX 265/70/17 (Great tires just should have gone with 285/70/17.)
Protection: Full RCI Skids with CBI Rock Sliders. (I regret buying the CBI Rock Sliders because of the customer service. Should have purchased RCI or BudBuilt.)
Front Bumper: Southern Style Off-road slimline bumper with high clearance add-ons.
Winch: 10,000 LB Warn S with steel cable
Roof Rack: LFD Crossbars. Works great for what I use them for.

After the lift and the addition of the skid plates, it rides like a Cadillac. It isn't going anywhere fast but it will go anywhere you want to go. My 4Runner is way more capable off-road than I am. I like to joke that I'm holding her back. lol! Like I said before I love my 4Runner and wouldn't change anything, except the CBI rock sliders. I actually haul more stuff with my 4Runner than I ever did with my Tacoma. It is just so versatile. Hope this helps. Once you go 4Runner you never go back! lol!

thanks for the reply. Anyone have anything more specific on factory options?

My sister has a '13 limited hasn't done her any wrong as expected. The quality is there. Only thing that went bad was the power steps last year. She's around 160k now or more.

Factory suspension on that comes with x-reas or whatever they call it. It's some fancy sway bar set up. They use it on lexus also.
You'll get a lot of creature comforts in the limited and be pimpin with 20s

The 17 limited I am looking at is fancy with lots of options. Yes xreas. I am thinking of ditching the 20s and putting on a new set off take off 21' 17"SR5 wheels.

Have you driven one yet? Seat isn't as big and comfy and your Denali. I know when I drive my sisters I have the seat almost all the way back and you're taller than me, so definitely worth giving that a feel.
You've already accepted it isn't gonna be quick.

This could help with that!

The other problem is I drove a 2020 Yukon XL while on vacation. I averaged 22.5 mpg over 1600 miles of mostly lower speed driving!

If you're going to lift it anyway, probably not worth doing the TRD Pro, only to replace the upgraded suspension. And the TRD Offroad has KDSS.

If you're considering an Outback, what about a HIghlander?

Flame me all you want, but I'm not a fan of them. Hopefully this doesn't come across wrong but..

My wife had a 4th gen 4R, replaced with an '06 Sequoia when we had kids, and just last month we picked up a '13 4R because she was growing tired of the mom-mobile. For the money, my 230k mile 200 series was an insanely higher quality vehicle than her "new" 80k mile 4runner. Maybe that's an unfair comparison, but in the current market, they were worth within $500 of each other. I'd take a high mileage cruiser over the 4r. I'm only 5'10" and the interior is super tight in my opinion.

Dont get me wrong, they're higher quality than most other vehicles out there, they look great and aftermarket support is awesome. Maybe I've just grown accustom to the weight and build quality of all the generation cruisers, but I've intentional not sold her '06 sequoia yet because i think in 6-8 weeks, she might change her mind.

I just can't imagine going from your Denali to your 4R.

This is all the stuff I want to hear. The limited seat moves up/down and back quite a bit more than the SR5 that I drove. It has whistles and bells but not the HP to get out in traffic. The Denali is older but is a ONE owner that my wife bought new. I have serviced it all its life. It has 182k on it and still runs out good and I have gotten 18 mpg at 70 mph on road trips. It will tow 8900 lbs and has air shocks on the back. I have also installed air bags and Z71 springs. NOT that I tow with it but it did drag a horse trailer around for years. It also has a new GM trans in it with less than 10k on that. Really it does everything I want it to do. I have just had the urge to get something newer.

Who knows...

Looks are important to me! Just kidding, but I am not too interested in them. The outback with the 3.6R is fast enough. And I like the Java brown seats :)

I'd take your Denali over a 5th gen limited any day. I have to agree with Brandon on his points comparing to a 200 it sucks and I'm glad I never bought the 5th gen I almost did before finding the 200.
You'll definitely miss the drive of the Denali pretty quick

Hey @matzell , @JohnVee sent me the link about the Denali. I sent you a pm. I'm interested in it for my sister. I'm in Greensboro, NC, part of ONSC down here

Spoke with @matzell during the week, and made the run to his shop yesterday with my daughter. Took Big Red for a spin, and a quick exchange of some paperwork, and made the run back home. Averaged 18 mpg on the 200 mile trip, with absolutely no complaints.

It heads to Florida tomorrow to become the nicest vehicle my sister has ever owned.

Thanks for taking such great care of Big Red, Rob.

I made sure not to let my daughter drive it, because it would have stayed here. LOL

So I just found out today you can not get a CD player in a 5th gen after 2019! Just as I was getting used to cassettes in the 94 80. What will I do now????:)
I love my cd collection, guess I will have to put them on a drive??
