I figured out that, 5.29's are only weaker if you go above 37's. They work fine with 37's, if you go above 37's you should do either 4.88 plus reg ear the center diffs or if you go to 44's possibly 5.29's and reg ear the center diffs. Tell me what you think.

Clearly guys run them with big tires in rough stuff. I don’t think the size of them is as important as install and quality parts. They don’t make 5.29’s for dudes to run 33” tires, its for the big stuff.

How did you figure this out

I am running 35s' now and am actually thinking of running 5.29s as I do plan on adding more weight in the future (rear bumper, drawer system, more gear {recovery, and camping}) As @Jgunner mentioned if you are running 33s' regear the center locker. Most on here will say run 4.88 with 35 and 5.29 for 37 or larger.

I run 5.29's and 37's. Speedometer is off, and only get's more off the faster you go. if i'm doing 65 the speedometer says I'm around 73 mph.
I know fixes exist, like the yellow box, but it's not high on my list at the moment.

Conventional wisdom and basic logic would dictate the larger the tire, the deeper the gear. Not sure why you'd want to dial back to a smaller gear reduction to run a larger tire.

5.29's are quite common and most (almost all) run them in conjunction with a 37+ tire. Few failures. Most of the "5.29's are weaker" talk is speculative. Or rather, yes they may be weaker, but they're still plenty strong for the application.

This chump's $.02 :D

5.29s and 37s here, couldn't imagine running anything else gearing wise 4.88s wouldn't cut it.

I’ve been on 37’s and 4:88s for a while. Gearing is about identical to stock. I choose 4:88’s since they gave me more options in the event I decide to change my build back to more overlanding.

Its how i am setup and it doesn’t. 4.88 and 35’s was nice, now it feels sluggish again. Time for 10% in the high side t-case!

5.29 and 37s no problms.

Im pretty sure this is the route I am going. my KM3's are actually 36.5's brand new. What's your RPMS at highway speed? @ 75MPH?

I honestly don’t recall, I hardly ever drove it that fast. The truck was usually loaded up to the hilt when it hit the freeway to go wheeling. But I think 70mph was under 3000rpm. You can use the grimjeeper gear calculator to play around with your ratios given a particular tire size.

I've got 5.29's in mine. I've had 37's, 35's, and now have been trying what is basically a 34x9.50 for hunting because of the ice and snow. I will be going back to at least a 36, as these are too heavy for the skinnies when the snow gets deep. Actually will more than likely sell my axles complete with the 5.29's and factory lockers soon, I will be doing an LS swap and it negates the need for the steep gears. I will try and find some stock 4.11 geared axles.

What engine you running? I’m currently trying to decide what gears to get. My set up is a 1967 FJ40 with the original 1F engine. I have 1985 FJ60 axles running 35x10.5 tires. I can’t decide between 4.88 or 5.29. I don’t care about top speed, I just don’t want it to be sluggish when starting from stops. I don’t plan on doing heavy 4x4. Mostly overlanding with some hill climbs.

You answered your question ;) 5.29s !! all day long 😎

You should have more power on hills and basically throughout the power band.

4.88 + 10% underdrive on high and Lo range + 37s. Perfect combo IMO.
Same here. The speedo is only off by 1% so that’s nice.

I initially did 10% underdrive with 3.11 low gears in my xfer case on 35's. Felt great and very close to stock rpm's. One advantage is out of your xfer case you get 3.3 in 4lo. I then went to 37's and did 4.56 gears in my diffs. This put me very close to stock rpm's, slightly higher. Just another way to do it. Disregard the above, I thought this was for an 80.
