Something is broken, are both drive shafts in place? Lock the CDL, lock the axles, with it in P, jack it up and try to turn the tires. You shouldn't be able to turn any of them. Or, just in P, CDL locked, jack up one tire at a time, shouldn't be able to turn any of them.

Ok I'll jack it up tomorrow and try to turn the tires by hand and see if they move with CDL locked while in P.

I believe that both drive shafts are in place will crawl underneather tomorrow.

The CDL and rear dof both locked. The front dif has not locked.

Sometimes it's hard to let go of your favorite sweat shift

If your rear wheels were spinning (or one was), and neither front wheel was spinning, a previous owner may have installed a "part time" kit.

True enough, though pic shows ctr caps so i guess that theory is out. My thought was more aimed at driveline damage... stripped drive flange, missing driveshaft, dirty sale with no ring gear, etc.

With not holding in park while in 4 high sounds like there is more at play here

Edit. If your 12401 is referencing your zip then check the clubhouse section for closest group or chime in to see if anyone is nearby that may be able to assist. Majority of these guys are likely further south but worth a shot

I locked the CDL put in P jacked up each tire. Fronts spin freely in both directions. Rear moves slightly in both directions before locking.

How about the drive shafts? Are they installed?

Yup, definitely connected. Can you pull the center caps and pull the birf end cap cover off to see if you see a birfield stub inside?

I'm guessing you mean to un bolt these 6 bolts? Also how do i get that cap off?

Just pull that little dust cap/dome off the center with some channel locks.

no..... dont undo those nuts and cone washers just yet.
The round dust cap will pop off with a rubber mallet, a flat edge may help to pry it off.
You will see (or should see unless its not there, hence your problem) the end of the birfield resting in the splined portion of your drive flange (thing held on with 6 nuts). Also this is one piece i was referencing that could be stripped of splines preventing front wheel power. However it is usually accompanied with a grinding noise when stripped so not sure this is your culprit. Also tends to work in reverse but not forward. Or low range like you specified because Center diff is locked when you go to LOW

I would pull the cap first to see if you can see the end of the birf along with the c-clip. You can get that cap off with a screwdriver and hammer.

That would explain your 2WD predicament....now to understand why somebody took the birfs out. I am suspecting damage to the front differential. Looks like you will be tearing into your front axle soon. Post updates for us.

This also explains why your truck rolls when you put it in park in 4H and it rolls, its because there are no birfs to hold the front axle to the wheels. With the center diff locked (in 4L) the rear tires hold the car in park.

because its not :(

duggy is most likely correct unfortunately. PO probably toasted the front diff somehow and pulled axles/birfs so he could still drive it 2wd

Im guessing the center diff is locked otherwise youd have issues driving regardless with the viscous coupler sending power to the front with no resistance. This is achievable through a few different means. The pin 7 mod that was discussed, or check for missing fuses. Without the CDL button one can put it in low range to lock cdl and pull the ctr diff fuse and put it back in high range and ctr diff is still locked.

That stinks but at least your on to the solution now.

Makes sense. Does this also explain the rolling in P issue?

We've found that it rolls in P while in 4 H, but in 4 L the rear wheels do not roll.

Could you tell me what the next step is?

I edited my post above, but yes it does explain it.

Next steps are to pull the other cap and see if there is a birf in there. If there is not, pull your 3rd member differential and inspect for any damage on the gears, housing, center section. There has to be a reason why this was done.
