Hi, a maybe strange question: has anyone ever tried to build a 4wd indicator for the early transfer case (one piece) ? I am thinking of maybe using a heavy duty sealed switch such as the reverse maybe mounted somewhere close to the fwd linkage ?

I have freewheeling hubs but not automatic

Thanks

The vacuum transfer has such a switch on the shifter assembly. It is just like reverse switch or brake switch. The indicator goes in the dash. LC's of all breeds that have had vacuum shifters have had indicators so there are probably many ways of doing this. Of course this indicator will not tell you that your hubs are locked or unlocked...

my 73 came pre wired for one bought the switch at the dealer had the dash light, and the wires were there from the factory just had to bolt and plug it in .dont know if or when they stopped doing this good luck

Shelfboy1,

Where does this switch mount on your 73? Here is a pic of where the switch is on my 71 vaccum shifter.

saw the wiring for it in the fsm thats where i got the idea. the switch screwed into the shift fork housing and the dash was pre wired for the light but i dont think it was the usa diagram hope this helps

Here is the mechanical shifter. Did it screw into 1 or 2? 1 is where you access the bolt that releases the shift fork from the shaft, and 2 is the place where the spring and detent ball fit. Maybe there is a different style housing?

Mark, on the vacuum shift, the detent ball is what activates the 4WD switch. I wondered about doing that when I went from vacuum to mechanical linkage. Saved all the parts anyway. Kind of a cool idea.

Yes, but on the vacuum shifter it's a BIG hole! :D on the mechanical shifter it's a 8mm hole. Just wondering if the switch is that small. The only reason I'm interested is if I have to convert back to mechanical for some reason. ;)

its been a long time but if i remember correctly it went in 2 .the switch was threaded and screwed right in and the wires were already their from the factory so all i did was plug them in .the dealer had no trouble getting the switch .i actually got several and sold 2 on ebay a few years ago hope this helps .my trucks all have 4 speeds now except my 65 lwb 45 so i havnt tried this with the 4 speed but the switch is similar to the vacum one it had to leads on it with male plugs i think.i may still have the 3 speed case from it here somewhere i will snoop when its a little warmer 10 to 20 here now good luck

I'll go through my coffee can filing system and check it when I get home:beer:

I think that one is riding around in my FJ45 (in daily use), Ed, unless you have a collection...

My '83 BJ42 has a mechanical shifter for the t-case and it has a 4wd indicator light as well, factory stock, maybe someone else knows how this works, or at least is parked in a warm dry place and can have a look?

Nope, that would be the one. Glad you are using it. Assuming it is not riding on the floorboard of the 45;)
