Hello All,

I'm getting ready to buy an H55 Tranny, new. I have a 5/85 FJ60. I'm right on the cusp of the change-over. I've read the available swap threads, and people talk about a "Spacer" in the 4spd, that if there, means a relatively easier install...

Is this the post 4/85 tranny, and is this the spacer?

Also, do I have to worry about Domestic vs non-USA model H55? I'm planning on buying from toyotapartsdirect.com

Any other tips - hints - suggestions about this swap to make the job easier and all the right parts I'll need available would be greatly appreciated! :):)

I'm planning on rebuilding and using the stock T'case.

Thanks much,

You're good to go on the h55f.

I think the difference between the h55f's is whether it was mated to the 2f or a diesel, something to do with the input shaft spline count, iirc.

USA model LC's were never offered with an H55f or a diesel engine.:frown:

As long as the trans is meant for a 2f engine you are OK. Mine is a 4/85 and had the spacer and 3F bellhousing. PLEASE NOTE I still had to clearance (read grind) the bellhousing to make the H55 bolt up. It is not hard to do, just frustrating when you think you don't have to grind and you bolt it up but it won't go the last 1/4 in.

The spacer is simply the space where the 5th gear of the h55 goes. That is, for Toyota to make them interchangeable/bolt on to the transfer case, the 4 speed needed this spacer because the h55 is longer due to the 5th gear.

Dynosoar,

What area of the bellhousing did you have to grind? This is the first I've heard of anyone having to do this. What wouldn't go the last 1/4 inch? The tranny (so there was a 1/4" gap btwn bellhousing and trans mating surface?) or are you talking about the bolts or ... ?

Thanks!

use a one from a hj60 (6 diesel) , not from a bj60(4 diesel) ,diferent otput shaft ,6 cylinder diesel use the same output as the 2f

its the input shaft thats different........ HJ course spline, same as 2F... BJ fine spline, no workie....

Thanks for all the info guys. My H55 is on the way.

Mine too!

Now who wants to rebuild a T'case?

Approximately how long would a h55 swap take(not including a t-case rebuild, mine is new...)?

Don't forget to plug the un-used hole in the front of the t-case. 1/4 NPT tap and a hex plug. Also, the oiler cup in the front of the t-case.

Don
