not much for updates, developed a bit of a wobble at around 60kmh, wasn't sure if it was a bent rim, funky tire, or???

So I swapped on the bitchin nylon L78's

Frontier All Traks

Don't know how old these tires are, but I'm guessing about thirty years.

they howl louder than dano's swampers...but my wobble seems mostly gone, so must be tire or rim related. Guess my search for some skinny tires just got bumped up the priority list.

Tires

Keep your eyes open for Stephen's tires... Although they're likely already mounted on some new rims and on another truck.

....pssst...dude.... I'm Ryan....:flipoff2:

Got em from abel with the rims, only 3 caps, and all for the back but I took the best one, shined it up ( and yeah, I did feel kinda gay polishing a hubcap) and put it on the spare.

Doubt I'd ever actually put caps all around, but looks cool on the spare.

If it doesn't rain tomorrow I'm going to try to get all mathematical and scientific and s***, see if I can't figger out which tire is wobbly ( if in fact it is a tire...)

No worries on the cowl, although I did curse it briefly yesterday when a gust of wind blew it over and spilled my beer...

yay me...:bang:

from the wtf file, we also have me having to swipe some brake parts off my spare 42 housing, because the levers for the ebrake are missing...

probably wont get it all done today, also have swapping out my smashed to f** windshield and wrestling a 32x11.5 onto a narrow ass stock rim on my list for the weekend.

yeah, this afternoon is out, womenfolk started showing up so I bailed. thanks for the offer tho. Hoping to get back at it tomorrow afternoon.

got the bearings out anyways, as Mr Kay would say, ******* the pusher... ( it blew an o-ring...hence the puddle of goo and me goddamning it )

if your wondering at this arrangement for getting the bearings out, I once tried the slide hammer method, borrowed a big one from work, and succeeded only in giving myself the classic slidehammer pinch.

at that time I had the diff out so it was a bit easier to jack from the pumpkin hole, but this worked.

Anyone know which way they're SUPPOSED to go back in? they came out with the open side of the bearing facing out, just want to make sure that's the right way.

I don't have a manual around with shiny pictures for me to look at.

Thats brilliant!!! I'm still laughing.... very creative indeed.

When I did mine I used a slide hammer and pinched myself several times. The profanity was echoing throught the neighbourhood. Finally got them out though. Can't remember how they go back in though.....sorry.

I'm guessing the online manual isn't much help as the drawings in those look like the manual company sub contracted the artwork and picture drawing to a class Kindergarden kids. Sweat shop overseas Kindergarden kids at a guess.

If you find yourself on this side of the "hat" trying to avoid the estrogen tsunami give me a call and we'll head for a pint or two. Dan-O has my number.

Oh those are good ones! Putting rotor blades on involve a 5 pound blade bolt that doesn't line up until the blade is held just right... By then you have half your body weight on it and when it lines up you have a half pound of flesh on the palm of your hand between the head of the blade bolt and the grip... Such a nice scar!

i have always just busted the rear semi float bearings out with whatever, hammer, screwdriver, chunk of round stock. it's the race in the housing that's a bitch. pull the seal and smash away.

you having trouble getting the race out? a little trick i learned is to put a bead of weld ON JUST THE RACE ONLY, right in the middle of it all the way around.

shrinks the bastid just enough to pull out with your finger (when cooled of course).

new race taps in like a good thing, and i think the bearing only goes in one way.

it's been a while, so i might be talking out my ass... but that's what i remember.

i don't think i've seen a semi float here, maybe on an old... na.

can't find a good pic of the rear semi or i'd post it.

cheers

nah, no problems.

I made a little hunk of metal that fits inside the axle tube and when you turn it sideways it catches the edge of the race.

So the bearings, race and seal all pop out in 30 seconds with the this method, provided your jack doesn't suddenly spring an arterial leak...works great.

Easier with the pumpkin out, but I was too lazy for that. had toyed with the idea of end for ending the diffs and doing the knuckles but I'm putting it off...

still, got the second one loose, and two whacks with hammer and it was out.

Not looking at it right now (still in exile) but I think the bearing could be tapped in either way, straight cut and all, might have a bit more chamfer on one side tho. and if that chamfer agrees with the way the old ones came out, that's how I'll stick them in.

it would get more oil if the open side was in, that's why I sortof wonder if they were in right.

(dang aussie FF snob....:flipoff2:)

i bet if you had a "stringer" running for-and-aft it would have worked!:flipoff2:

Perhaps, although a crossmember running athwartships would've been better:hillbilly:

you know, similar to boats and planes, trucks have a front and back...the front would be that bit you're lookin over as you drive, hummming Alouette, gentille Alouette ...:flipoff2:

ok, tending away from dano's sudden obsesson with stringers that run crosswise, ( and I guess also by that logic, crossmembers that run for and aft:flipoff2: )

got it all back together, and it's conceivably possible I'll even have a functioning ebrake at the end of all this, but for some reason, there's a fair bit of slack in the cable running across the back of the axle. (And no it's not a 60 cable) didn't notice an adjustinator for that slack, but then didn't look too hard either.

I had to bust into my stash of axle shafts and side gears, the splines were pretty worn, surprizingly so even. 330K on the 42, but I suspect they weren't particulary easy miles...
and note to self, put grease on bearing surfaces of spare axle shafts before chucking them into a shed for ten years...

Didn't swap the lump for the front one, chances are I'll be in there again at some point, but it seemed ok. (famous last words...)

also put in a windshield that isn't smashed to s***, chickened out and cut the seal on the good glass so as not to break it, but with the smashed one, I didn't have to be so careful...just levered it out with a cats paw to the sound of cracking and crunching..:hillbilly:
String trick still works great.

so I'll be back to just the usual cringe when passing a cop in an old cruiser.

other than that, still waiting for black cordura to go on sale so I can make some seat covers that are a little more elegant than the garbage bag that's presently in use.
