ha, yeah right...this comin from a fawking alberta oil baron...:flipoff2:

Time I have lots of...

It's hard work bein cheap...:hillbilly:

got some new hooves today...

they're wider than I want, but the rims were free, (courtesy of goatbarn.inc) and tires were pretty damn close to free...:hillbilly:

So for now, they'll do until I find the skinny tires I want.

I better start lifting some weights if I'm going to steer this fawker...

32x11.5 mtrs.

Tomorrow is officially "doorfest" and test drive day...:D

turbo and winch for sure I think, well winch anyways, not sure I need a turbo even tho I already have a couple ...as for ps, I need the excersize...

there's a cheap ramsey winch in ladysmith right now that tempts me...aside from hating facebook, christmas & kittens I'm also the guy who doesn't like 8274's.:hillbilly:

First test drive is complete....a few rattles but no wobbles, so I'd give that a passing grade.:bounce:

always an important moment...when instead of it being a pain in the ass that lives in the garage, it's actually useful.

dragged the extra s*** I want to keep out to the goatbarn.

and then 'doorfest' became considerably more involved than I'd anticipated...

turns out the green 42 doors are dang near minty fresh from about midway up, window felts, seals etc.

So instead of purtying up one set of doors, I'm hacking up a mediocre set of doors to fix a s***ty set of doors...

odd brand of insanity this. I'm sure it makes sense to someone out there..:bang:

Used my flanging tool to patch the bottoms on. worked pretty well. I'm sure they won't be dead flat, but my give a s*** quotient is decreasing as I get closer to driving..:hillbilly:

second shot shows the flange stamped in.

It doesnt make sense to me??? :flipoff2: but maybe later after a few wobbley pops while inhaling some good paint fumes i will understand.

well ya see...:hillbilly:

one set is mediocre from top to bottom, with seized mechanisms and rotten rubber seals and window tracks...

other set is beautifical from about midway up with innards that function smooth as a gravy sammich, but has rotten bottoms...

there were a few wobbly pops involved in the decision, but I'm still ok with it a day later...

you do nice work son... i wish i was making your pace of progress on my junk!

or any progress for that matter

cheers

yeah, but I kinda wish the roof was as optional up here as it is down there...:crybaby:

just remember it's a 10foot paintjob, and it looks fine....

roof optional? i'll take a pic next time it rains (that should be any moment, this time of year).

i'd need a scuba mask without a roof... at least it's warm.

cheers

what, it rains there? I thought tropical fruit gently decended from the skies and was handed to you by mermaids wearing clamshell bikinis? :flipoff2:

no sympathy here, it's been raining torrentially for days AND it's friggin cold.

my driver's seat has absorbed about 4 gallons of water I think...didn't quite get seatcovers happening quickly enough...:bang:

much as I don't want to, I may have to clean up the hardtop and put it on.

and doorfest continues...

decided to keep my spare door intact and go all "foxhole" on the bodywork...

strip of metal, hammer and vice and ended up with this. fit ok, was a bit of a bugger doing the corner, but my vice has a knobby do'er on the end so that helped.

cruiser doors kinda suck. they're so flat it takes nothing to warp them, and this one was wowed way in before I even touched it. so I made a little cheater bar to stuff inside. helped flatten it a bit, but it's hardly perfect.

Dec_2010_003.jpg

and then I zapped in all the scraps of metal , etch primed and put some "weld improvement compound" on it...

tomorrow I'll sand it off and see how it looks. probably good enough. Think I'll spray some rockerguard on the bottoms of these...

Looking good "MacGyver"
how did you do that double bend about 1/12 inches above the bottom of the door?? I was thinking of doing it with 2 or 3 pieces but your method is much better.:hhmm:

just vice and a hammer....:hillbilly:

drew a couple parallel lines on it, and whacked it one way and then the other...

if you slide it along only a little bit at a time, it helps keep things lined up

I have another vice that's more of an anvil, so it's good for making 90's at the edges.

Well, ahoy there our Spudacious friend, you need to have a look at the project Land Cruiser that landed on my doorstep last night... if you're driving by, it's a little hard to miss, though it can't stay out too long or the neighbors might complain about their property values going down.

uh oh... dare I ask?

something I once owned and bastardized perhaps?

Unfortunately, I don't think your hands have touched this one. It's a 1977 FJ45 that has mostly been sacrificed to the coastal rain gods.

There's barely an intact panel, though the hood is quite good.

The engine cranks over, and I'm sure if it had some gas it would start right up.

they do have a slight issue with rust don't they?

There's one that meets that description just around the corner from me...Ian hasn't decided to spend some more money has he?:hhmm:

funny , but when I saw your post, being the pessimistic sort, I had visions of one of my old trucks showing up with dead engine and a grumpy owner...

:bounce::bounce2:

well, it got me to the liquor store and back...:hillbilly:

got the doors into primer , and then said, fuuuuckit I'm sick of this painting bull****, so I stuck them on squirted some oil into the rear diff and took it for a burn...

then I promptly came home and tightened up the steering box:eek:

stays in one lane now for the most part, some interesting grumbles and growls, but all pretty much functional.

I'm pretty sure I'll have to throw a new clutch and brake master into it at some point soon, actually kindof shocked they still work, this thing sat for 10 years.

and just for the sake of being a picture whore,

door with rockerguard (aka wonk covering muck) on it...

primed...
Dec_2010_011.jpg

all together, and ready for the sketchy test drive, where you wonder which noise is the one that's from you forgetting a couple bolts....

and this is how she'll sit for a while, sick of painting, so I don't even want to look at my green hardtop for a few months.

Now to convince mark he needs to part with one of his 47 soft tops...:flipoff2:

and for wombat, this is the gun I use. works great, and cost about 30 bucks. with my abilities, I'm not sure a 400 dollar gun would give me a better paint job...so I'm pretty happy with it.
