:pI'm not talking about 40's of colt 45 here

The 40 i'm picking up tonight has long jump seats.

The only legal place to put my toddler is in the front seat.

Any other parents out there let their kids sit shotgun?

An option i have is to get a rear seat out of a tracker/heep and put in the rear...which i really don't want to do. But will probably do once the new baby comes in Nov.

The trooper i spoke to on the phone said he would never put a kid in the front seat of a jeep/cruiser.

Granted this is no heep...this is a 1967 tank.

No air bags, with a roll bar i'm pretty sure it will do better in a roll over situation than any passenger car whether your in front or rear....from a side impact stand point a kid will be no safer in the front than in the rear of the 40.

And as far as a front impact...it's a 40...your not going fast enough to catch up with them to hit them from behind!!!

and if i were hit from behind i'd rather the kid be in the front with me than in the rear.

No air bags to deploy to hit the kid.

Just thinking out loud here.

what are you opnions???

I let Josie my 5 year old ride in the front seat. She has a booster seat. I only let her ride when I drive around town.

I bought a rear bench and a family cage but I'm too lazy to install them.

My oldest would ride in the front of my 40 as an infant (in a carseat) while my wife sat in the rear jump seat. That was 24 years ago.....

The trooper was probably not thinking about an older vehicle with no air bags. If the child is big enough to ride in a forward facing seat and there is no airbag I'd be ok with it. I have my son's car seat in the front of my pickup (no air bags) because there is no where else to put him. I'f I was going to put him in my 40 I'd put in a back seat and put him in the back in the middle. When you have kid #2 you'll have to put a rear seat in anyway so you might as well do it now, besides I doubt the :princess: will want to ride in the jump seats anyway. I would definately put my kid in a front seat of a 40 in his car seat before I would put him in the jump seat. I now have a 2 year old and 3 month old so I'll be putting a rear bench in the 40 eventually. Times have changed!!

SECTION 56-5-6410.
Child passenger restraint systems; age and weight as basis for required restraining system; standards.

Every driver of a motor vehicle (passenger car, pickup truck, van, or recreational vehicle) operated on the highways and streets of this State when transporting a child five years of age or younger upon the public streets and highways of the State must provide an appropriate child passenger restraint system and must secure the child as follows:

(1) A child from birth up to one year of age or who weighs less than twenty pounds must be properly secured in a rear-facing child safety seat which meets the standards prescribed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

(2) A child who is at least one year of age but less than six years of age and who weighs at least twenty pounds but less than forty pounds must be secured in a forward-facing child safety seat provided in the motor vehicle which meets the standards prescribed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

(3) A child who is at least one year of age but less than six years of age and who weighs at least forty pounds but not more than eighty pounds must be secured by a belt-positioning booster seat. The belt-positioning booster seat must be used with both lap and shoulder belts. A booster seat must not be used with a lap belt alone.

(4) If a child is at least one year of age but less than six years of age and weighs more than eighty pounds, the child may be restrained in an adult safety belt. If a child less than six years of age can sit with his back straight against the vehicle seat back cushion, with his knees bent over the vehicle's seat edge without slouching, the child may be seated in the regular back seat and secured by an adult safety belt.

(5) A child who is less than six years of age must not occupy a front passenger seat of a motor vehicle. This restriction does not apply if the motor vehicle does not have rear passenger seats or if all rear passenger seats are occupied by other children less than six years of age.

Any child restraint system of a type sufficient to meet the physical standards prescribed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the time of its manufacture is sufficient to meet the requirements of this article.

My nephew rode shotgun in my 55 when he was younger. His mother and grandmother were concerned that there were not any airbags but when I walked around the Pig and hit the sliders and bumper with a hammer and described how (heaven forbid) I got into an accident my 55 would slice through a 5-star rated minivan like budda they agreed that it was OK. Besides, Uncle Steve had a big Jeep :bang: that was too cool not to ride in...

Child seat was used of course.

I understand your concern for your child. I myself do not have the option. All of my rides are two seaters (single cabs). I just go into defense mode when he's riding with me. Heck my pop's didnt have the options when I was just a child either. I think my next ride is gonna be a early 50's cadilac convertible. Were still around right?

my 11 year old is the size of a small adult. 5 ft tall, 100lbs. I'm guessing she's going to be fine in the jump seats.

After riding a motorcycle for years, i'm always in defense mode!!!

other drivers don't see a huge lifted cruiser, why would they see a bike?

Seats

That was a condition of the wife when I bought mine - has to be family sized. I went with the best top flip & fold. It works fine. One is in a booster the other in a full car seat and they love it back there. I did line the floor with a heavy duty rubber bed liner. I also have heard some not like the flip & fold bc in the case of a wreck the latch would release. There's really no place to flip & fold it anyway so I would lean towards the other option if I had it to do over. Then we had 3 - any ideas on how to get a family of 5 in a 40? It may be time for an upgrade if anyone is interested in it.

I've ridden all of my kids in the front of either the 60 or the Nova. All are in car-seats. Usually only when it's just me and one of them. However, I did NOT know that the law says they have to be 6 before they can ride up front. In my opinion, I'd rather ride them up front forward facing than in the rear of a 40 facing sideways.

i have a front bench seat in the cruiser.

3 in the front

2 in the rear!!!

They changed that when air bags came around. I think any reasonable officer would understand putting a kid in a front seat of a 40 VS. sideways in a jumpseat.

i just don't want to have ANY reason for a cop to pull me over.

My kids ride in my pickup front seat all the time. Unless there is an airbag I don't see an issue.

Compared to other cars etc. out there, I think you are more than fine in the front. Sitting sideways in the back, I personally would not do with a child that was very small.I used to have to put our child in the front seat of our Honda Prelude, got to be better than that, the car seat would not fit in the rear seat. 2 cents, Mike

Personally, I do not think the stock jump seats are safe for anyone so I removed mine completely for more space to pack stuff. When my grandsons get a ride, it's always with a baby seat in the passenger seat.

The only time I have ever been stopped by police in a Cruiser was once when the license plate light was out on my FJ80. It was a slow night and the state trooper was just "fishing" for anything else but let me go with a promise to get a new bulb right away. I would take it as a badge of honor if I could ever get a speeding ticket in my 40. :D
