40 rims on a 60

There is an older post about this. Let me see if I can find it.

Those stock steel wheels and hubcaps DO look pretty nice on the 60 don't they?

MDH33 Thanks for the links! The "Old School" look is for me! Now to find 5 wheels. pics courtesy of mud member *britklr*

I always liked the 40 wheels with hubcaps but they were too narrow for my taste.

The solution was to cut off the old rims and weld new 8" rims on the centers at the stock backspacing and this is the result.

I bought the rims (if I remember correctly they are officially called wheel shells) from Rimex, Inc. in Phoenix, AZ. However, any good dirt track racing shop should be able to get them. I took the 40 wheels and new shells to our local machine shop where they chucked the wheels in a lathe, cut off the old shells, trued, and welded the new shells on. If you do not want to go through all this I believe Stockton wheels or Wheel Vintiques will convert your 40 wheels to whatever size you want.
If you do this and do not want to use spacers be sure you use wheels off a later disc brake 40 or early 1980s HiLux 4X4.
Cheers!

I'm also looking for someone to modify wheels. I'm buying a set of OEM 16" split rims and would like new outers welded on to get rid of the locking ring.

Does Rimex stock wheel shells? Did you just call them and order them? How does that work? I need 16x5.5" or 16x6"

Only companies that I can find who do this type of work are in California- Bolton Wheel and Stockton Wheel. Stockton is about twice as expensive from the quotes I got. But shipping is the main problem.

How hard was it to find a machine shop that was willing to put together your wheels for you?

Rimex stocked several different diameter/widths, including 16", I called them on the phone and ordered them by size. This was in 2005 so hopefully not much has changed. A lot of machine shops will probably shy away from this due to liability issues (another product of our sue-happy society). I used a shop that caters to the dirt track crowd and had no problem.
