4 speed shifting .... how's it supposed to "feel"

As stated by others. It's a truck and it'll shift as such. Mine shifts smoothly every which way, so long as I let it shift into neutral before shifting into the next gear. When I learned to drive a rig they'd say 'click-click'... its two shifts. Try to move it too quick and it'll fight you.

With a 350 and 200+ hp it'll beat you up if you don't listen to it... a little finesse and you're golden. I say 200+ cause I have no idea on how much the newer motor has... old one was 300ish.

One thing I haven’t seen anyone here reference is checking the pins in the shift tower. They do wear, and the leverage going into third is a lot more diagonal than the others, so worn tower pins will be most felt then.

Clunky. Clutch is mostly for dead stop starts. Hth

On another note. How high should the clutch pedal be before it engages? Seems I have to lift my foot pretty high- about 1/2 -2/3 travel from floor.

I bought a '79 FJ40 new. The clutch did not engage until the pedal was maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up. Thought this was a problem but turns out it was adjusted to spec. With domestic vehicles I'd owned the clutch engaged much lower.

My FJ60 is the same - engagement about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up.

As others have said smooth shifts seem to require a split second pause in neutral before plugging it into the next gear. You will feel some resistance if you speed shift.
