89 V6 runner will work just fine..

I seem to remember that pre-'92 had a little smaller piston in them. I would ask for the 93-96, those are supposed to be the biggest. Ive got '94s on mine and love em.

This thread needed that link. Thanks.

Baldredhead, would you or anyone else recommend something not as dusty that you have used? Or if those just stop well, that is actually more important. I don't want crappy and dusty though.

they stop fine for me.

since you're familiar with VWs.... they aren't as dusty as the OEM pads that were on the 2001 GTI i had.

nobody mentioned that you need to shave about 1/2" of dust shield off to get the bigger calipers to fit. I think I got my loaded calipers from a 93 and I got the MC from a similar year 4runner. I did both at the same time so I have no feedback on whether the stock MC is enough, but I have read a lot of posts from the guys saying that, so it must be true.

either way, it is a great mod, the 4runner calipers were cheaper than the 60 calipers!

^ LOL, that says it all. Now you know why I asked! My 2000 Passat was the same.

So if NAPA carries the loaded calipers and pads for $65 a side, and I found a pair of rotors on www.jtoutfitters.com for $49.95, then basically for about $180 you have a whole new set up front.

oooh, they're a littel more dusty than the mintex red pads that were on my audi. howzabout that for cross reference?

Good. I like the low dust of the Mintex reds, but they didn't stop as well. After a couple of years, they got dusty too.

I would be very wary of the jto rotors. I dont think they sell anything cheaper than anyone else and a lot of the stuff they sell is s***. Hijack over.....

Agent orange, thanks for the tip. What would your recommendation be?

NAPA lists the cheapies at 23.49 online. there is a listing for "vented rotors" for 39.99 each, but i'm pretty sure the 23.49 ones are vented too. the point is, check the local parts house.

OK guys, i am going tomorrow and purchase some 4runner calipers for my Fj62 and i plan on getting the 94' V6 4x4 4 runner front calipers. I have read that i need to do some trimming on te dust shield which isn't a big deal...i am more concerned with my OEM rims and will they still fit fine or not? I am looking forward to MORE braking power!

Bigsur - If you are in Dallas, the only Napa that carrys those in stock is one located in Plano. At least that is what the Napa in Lewisville told me. Otherwise you will have to order them.

ATTENTION, ATTENTION. You NEED to get '96 and later IFS calipers and VENTED rotors! If youre going to upgrade you might as well upgrade as well as you can. Those IFS rotors are four piston, and all the pistons are the same diameter. That and the VENTED rotors are WAY better!!!! While youre at it buy an FZJ master cylinder and plug that into your system. You can get them refurbed for 140.00 from AllPro Offroad.

Dude.. Do you have any idea that the stock rotors for a 60 are vented??

Plus the calipers can be older than 96..

BTW, the FZJ master is designed for 4 wheel discs.. Not necessary for a drum rear..

But I am happy that you feel so strongly about this ;)

Pre 1996 calipers are four piston yes, but the two trailing pistons are SMALLER in diameter and less powerful than the two forward pistons. You will not get the same power out of pre 1996 calipers. Yes an FZJ master is set up for four wheel disks, but the plunger for the FRONT is larger and transfers more fluid. It is a supeior upgrade? And isnt that why your upgrading your brakes to begin with?

I think youre working off some bad info. As i recall the 91-92 calipers have the smaller pistons, but 93-up to whenever the mounting pattern changed are the large ones. Let me search and see if i can find the part numbers, but im almost postive that its the 91-92 that are the ones with the smaller pistons. Even with those i would be suprised if they were any different from the others as far as seat of the pants braking though.

Ok here is a somewhat old post from dynosaur about this with casting numbers.....

After a lot of digging on the internet i found this.

89-91 calipers with casting mark s12w have four 43mm pistons

92-95 calipers with casting mark s13w have four 45mm pistons

2mm cannot make that much difference can they?

I got the set for a real fair price so I think I put some fresh seals on and give them a try.

Nope. You've still got some bad info.

At least as early as '93 the V6 truck has four equal size pistons. I've held them in my hands, installed them and serviced them. No question about it.

There is no reason to install an FZJ master. I've run '75 vintage drum brake M/Cs, standard FJ40 disc brake M/Cs, stock FJ60 and minitruck M/Cs, and T100 M/Cs with 4 wheel discs. Both large Toy calipers up front with GM calipers in the rear and large Toy calipers at all four corners. All of the M/Cs work perfectly with these setups.

Any more volume than what the calipers need is irrelevant.

If the FZJ front circuit piston is larger, that will increase the amount of pedal pressure needed to produce the same pressure at the caliper that you can get with a smaller bore M/C and less pressure on the pedal. Contra-productive.

And as mentioned above, ALL Cruiser rotors are vented.

Mark...

V6 calipers have the larger pistons..

Been making the V6 since at least 89..

The larger set I have on my 60 came off of a 1990 v6 runner.

And if you use a disk master on a set of rear drums you are looking at a headache..
