Hi All,

New to the forum, I'm after some help regarding a ticking noise coming from my 200 series.

Here is a video of the ticking -

I picked up the car from an auction, noticed a slight ticking noise when the car started which gets louder as the revs are increased

I went through the service manual and used tech stream. - the injector values were fine.

Then I did a cylinder shutdown test - I noticed the ticking reduced considerably when I shut off #8, however the ticking was still slightly there

I went ahead and changed #8 injector - when I started the car the ticking was still there, if not even a little louder than before.

Any suggestions as to what it may be will be of great help

Some info of the car;
2010 - 200 Series
4.5TD - 1VDFTV
340k kms

Thanks!

Sounds normal

Hey mate did you track down the sound ? Iv got the exact same sound and can't figure it out

My 200 with like 8000km less makes kinda the same sounds while beeing in idle…
I also guess it is normal probably also with the timing in advance that normally can cause a rough idle sind it is set to higher rpm but I am not that deep into engine stuff.

Hey Fellas,

Unfortunately for me, it was bad news. Full rebuild.

To save cash - I ended up pulling the engine. (first time ever)

When I pulled the injectors out - all the injectors looked brand new apart from the one I replaced - which was covered in carbon, much like the one 1 pulled prior.

Also noticed that the washer for both (new and old )#8 injector were only compressed on single side - meaning either injector wasn't seated properly either due to poor installation, the seat of the injector being fowled or due over detonation (if that's the right term) of cylinder 8.

After removing the heads, I noticed The number 8 cylinder was scored, possibly due to previous owner not changing injectors in time - leading to excess fuel in the cylinder causing damage to rings, leading to piston slap. Fortunately for me, bottom end bearings and crank were all good.

I have now dropped the block to the machine shop, getting bored and honed, crank polished and the heads reconditioned.

Let me know if you have any questions

Ok. Now I am scared. Will definitely pop the hood later when the engine is running and listen to it.

Hey mate interested to know if you've got it all back together and noise is gone?

Could you please provide an update - Did the engine rebuid eliminate the knocking noise?

What did you replace on the rebuild? Did you fit new lifters and rocker arms?
If you did, have they been inspected for any failures?
The lifters and rocker arms were inspected, and kept the same as were the injectors and fuel pump

I replaced the following;

- Oil pumps
-All gaskets
Pistons
Bearings corned & big end
Thermostat
All oil pipes and water hoses
Radiator (I damaged mine when taking it out)
Turbos (optional, I did this as preventative)

Thnx for the update. Did you go oversize on the pistons or did they rehone and fit std size pistons?
Interesting to sind out this has been listed in a TSB as below:
TSB EG-00130T-TME "Knocking noise caused by cylinder bore abnormal wear due to dust ingress" (v.2, 06/26/2019)

Did you had an abnormal injector offset in your obd reading? I checked mine like a week ago but none if the injectors showed anything bigger than +/- 1.9 mm3 per stroke.

I believe that Factory spec is +/-3 for injectors. Check them for variation at startup from full cold and then full temperature.
