The ticking is driving me mad....:bang:

Hopefully your ticking won't have the same result...

so i found this post kind of late... so my 2000 cruiser had the tic tic tic, and i took it to a local shop as I am only modestly handy with a wrench.. and lazy...

He found a crack in the exhaust manifold and ordered and replaced the right one.. after getting it all back together, found the left one is cracked as well.

I am currently into the repair for 300 bucks for the right manifold... so my question is...

1) Should i eat the 300 dollars, have him put the left one back on cracked, and wait for the headers... or if im already in for that much money, or should i just put on regular manifold and be done... I cannot send back the already installed right manifold.. but i haven't done anything to the left side yet...

opinions????/

$300 is a chunk, but if the other manifold is cracked and you have the extra bucks to throw down, I'd go headers all the way. You'll be much happier with the end result.

The simple math:

Regular Manifolds: $300 already spent on R manifold + another $300 for L manifold = $600

DT Headers: $300 already spent + $600 DT header parts + ~$700 (6-8 hours) installation labor = $1600.

The performance gains from aftermarket DT headers is nothing to scoff at (see dyno results), but it will cost you an additional $1k. I'm assuming if it cost you $300 to replace one side, it will cost you another $300 to replace the other. With that said, I can't believe you found someone to replace both headers for $600, but that is a smokin' deal. I was quoted $2600 to replace mine with regular manifolds, albeit a dealer quote. If the modest performance gains is worth the additional grand to you, then go with the DT headers. Personally, I would probably just spend another $300 and be done with it.

Nonsense - use emotion, you know you want the increased torque/hp and to hear your engine growl for once. Buy the headers. Have the same mechanic install them. The Lexus V8 should have had headers in the first place.

(by the way, our suggestions to go with the headers are not at all motivated by selfishness due to the fact that we still need more names on the group buy list...not at all....)

If you install them yourself you'll save a bundle...and $300 to R&R a manifold is a steal. Use that guy for the install if you don't want to do it yourself!

But spending $600 for OEM manifolds that are known to be faulty is a waste of $600, right? So this $600 versus $1,600 (a ludicrous estimate for DT headers by the way) is really a no-brainer.

I wish that I could get in on the group buy. Unfortunately money is a bit tight right now. Next time, if there is a next time, I will be in.

I have to admit I have not examined the exhaust manifold on the Land Cruiser, but 5-6 hours seems like an awful long time to install a set of headers?

Read through the other two group buy threads for install details...they are a little challenging because of the way the have to be snaked into the engine bay around all of the other gadgets (ie, steering linkage, loosening engine mounts to tilt the block, etc.) Not impossible by any stretch with the right tools, but a weekend project if you take your time.

I've read through most of the threads on this and I'm tempted.

Any measurable difference in the mileage? At $4 a gallon, I could pay for these pretty quickly if they help the mileage even a little.

Less resistance = better mpg, more torque and growly v8 sound = heavier foot. I get about 14 mpg with lift, 33 duratracs, and an ARB up front with the DTs.

Wow, that's good news as I was thinking about an ARB up front but was hesitant because of weight and MPG.

Yet another reason outside of the ticking to do the DTs

Or just pick up non cracked manifolds from someone who changed theirs out for headers. :steer:

On another note, this may be an option for you guys that have the newer Cruisers with the air pumps?

Yeah someone can have mine.. they weren't cracked but do have 150K. PM me off the thread here.

to add to the tech: I see no significant improvement in MPG with the DT headers, so don't do this for MPG gains, IMO.

Count me in on the group buy. Just checked with a local exhaust shop and they quoted me $600-800 for the install. I'll contact Nick on Monday. Just need 2 more now!
