Adding another FJ80:
Just "completed" (are they ever?) a 1992 FJ80 for my son's 16th birthday. He and I have been working on a 1991 restoration and frankly bought this one for the new BFG tires, non-faded seats and nearly perfect bumpers/stainless. After almost a year, I started driving this one and found it to be very solid and worth keeping for a while. The plan is to let my son drive it as a first car and then move him up into a newer Gen 5 4Runner in a few months.

The big surprise is tomorrow after school. Hope he like's Dad's retro touches. He has no idea. We told him this one was a "parts car" and would soon be sold. My take on retro Toyota livery, used Yakima bits and recycled pipe, non-up vintage KC lights, a new Sony radio, OEM shocks, recycled seat cloth, and lots and lots of detailing, polishing, cleaning, touchup. Still need to solve the sunroof leaks and those two knocking axels which I will tell him are lane departure warnings:)

Would you be interested in adopting a 30 something man? Asking for a friend. That thing looks rad as all get out.

1 3FE vs 3 1FZ-FE....I still prefer my 3FE after 4 yrs of ownership. Brought it bone stock ,1 owner Arizona car, and have personally done 99% of the modification to date. Now sitting on 37s and Icon 4" lift. I regularly wheel with newer Jeeps and other FZJ80s, and i still prefer my 91. The motor has 230k miles, with all emission control removed, advanced timing and keeping up with all maintenance, it is bone stock otherwise. It will pull grade just fine and keep up with the 4.5L and even the newer Jeep JKs on similar upgrades. 75-80mph on highway with AC on full blast and temp sits at 185-190 F all day, thanks to the all alum. Ron Davis Radiator, and tuned fan clutch with 25k oil. Don't believe in everything internet has to offer on the 3FE, i was skeptical at first, but seeing the results 1st hand, and what a bomb proof/realiable motor the 3FE truely is, i am SOLD. Will i do it all over again if i have a chance to build another 80 series with all things considered equal, you bet ya! Absolutely!!

Cheers!

Curious - which model of Ron Davis Radiator?

My brother came in from out of state so we went camping outside of Estes Park. Some fun driving up the mountain on a local forest service road. It was his first time driving a cruiser and he was amazed at the capability. He took this video driving back up to the campsite one evening. The aspens were gorgeous and soundtrack excellent for the drive :smokin:

looks like all Subaru trail. =)

I appreciate the reply Twilly. I maybe had one too many beers when I wrote that post. I was dreaming about more power for the old girl, and frustrated at how much an engine conversion would cost. Overall I love my crusier, but sometimes I do get frustrated at the fuel economy when coupled with very low power. Pulling down 9-12mpg while netting 155HP (when new anyhow) totally stinks. I feel like it might be easier to stomach that fuel economy if it was coupled with gobs of power.

I do appreciate the fact that it is 28 years old and still runs great. I agree, out on the backroads and trails, it is a nice power plant. Driving down the highway though, its not so great. That was an excellent point you made when putting the 3FE in context of the time the vehicle was released. Dating myself here, but 1991 was the year I got my driver license. I can think back on all of the low powered cars back then. The amount of power that cars put out now is pretty nuts, so it is a great point to keep in perspective that the FJ80 is a big durable beast from a bygone era!

Honestly, the most effective performance upgrade I did on my 3FE was moving from Albuquerque, NM to Portland, OR. That -5,000' of elevation is no joke. It is a noticeable difference! A cross country move can be pretty expensive though, so not necessarily a budget option.

Ditto on the Cummins 2.8 repower! I think that would be a good option for the FJ80.

What did you do to double your fuel capacity? I have a couple wavian nato style jerry cans. That is an all right solution, but I have been considering the Long Range Automotive 37 gallon replacement tank that is being sold by Long Range America. Another 12 gallons would be great, and not having to deal with jerry cans would be more convenient.

Sounds to me that you should consider gearing the TCase. It will make a big difference. I’m rolling on 5.29’s, 35’s and after gearing the Tcase I’m rolling about 14MPG highway and can cruise very comfortably at 65. The 2.8 is a good choice if the truck isnt built and heavy. i went through the phase you are going through and its cost me a lot of money to get the 3fe to just get me 70 comfortably. But, it wasn’t designed for that. I went though the swap phase, the sell it phase (almost went to an EB), and now I’m at the happy as hell phase. I focused in on what the truck is there for. For me, its my escape pod. Its there for me when i want to cruise and enjoy the scenery. I was 19 when the first 80 hit the road and to me it will always be a pinnacle.

Well, folks, come November, my 3FE 1992 will be receiving one of Rocket Rods’ built A440F tranny’s. Shes going to get a completely gone through FF axle. Once these things are done the truck is done except for getting the windows moving faster. Is a project ever complete? I’m going to say, yes. Love this truck and it’ll be in my estate.

Finally some respect for the 3FE!!!!! Very nice original rig on ebay right now and burning up the bid button. Go baby go!!!!!!!!

I was kind of thinking my fully FULLY built 1992 might fetch that much. Who knows, in 10 years maybe i could sell it and buy a lake house.

I just bought an early 1991 model year land cruiser fj80. it was made in April of 1990

The interesting thing about it is its a factory no 3rd row seats with the non sliding windows in the back. It has a solid second row seat too. notice the rims ( I think these are early factory) the 1991 brochure has a pic of one with these rims.) its pretty cool so far the 3fe has 185k. few things I am currently fixing on it. the rear pinion seal is leaking. (leak started right after I purchased) I am thinking it was a clogged breather because its not leaking as bad now. I did fill the diff back up. Other things.. the antenna is bent going to fix that with a new mast. I have new plugs and wires for a tune up coming. a spare EFI relay Just in case. I am putting a new exhaust pipe from the manifold to the cat because somebody did a poor job booger welding the o2 sensor In and it has a horrible exhaust leak. maybe Ill get better mpg with this new part. I have a new sensor to put in the with exhaust stuff. Other than that everything works. I drove it to Winston Salem North Carolina to Ocracoke Island and it ran fine all the way down averaging I think around 13mpg. The reasoning for the purchase is we just went through a bad hurricane here and my tacoma and my 3rd gen 4runner (4runner only had 120k) both died in the flooding. sad times indeed. but I got a cool new whip from it. any tips for keeping this old gal for at least 10 more years?
