Thanks from a beginner welder and a found on side of road Flowmaster to stock exhaust all the way to the tailpipe. Very quiet for a 3FE.

Just bought a 91. Don't know much about these that much. Needed a spare vehicle for the family, and always liked the look of the land cruisers. 212k. Everything works except the cruise control. Would like to figure that out. Seems to have a little valve train noise. Not sure how much is normal on these. Like the rig a lot so far. All stock.
the factory service manual has a real easy test sequence for the cruise control

Great job mine was the best investment for my family of 6, snd welcome to 80's world. With good baselining these things are Legends for ever.

Thanks Z. I could not be happier with it. I immediately sprang for weathertech floor mats and SOR seat covers to keep my grimy kids from screwing it up.

Picked this up for my son. 1992, 220k. I'll build some sliders for him in the next few weeks and get him a bumper for the front.

hey guys it's time for me to replace the battery on my 92. what is the biggest and best battery that fits in the box?

Group 31?

I recently purchased a 92' FJ80 for my 16 year old daughter with 196k on the clock. I just poured a small fortune into mechanicals: brakes, shocks, new radiator, new condenser, rebuilt rear differential, new exhaust and quite a few other needed repairs...yada...yada. Body wise, I deflared, mounted 40 rims powder coated with alum caps, and gave it a nifty paint job (if i don't say so myself) :).

That said, for starters, I have one 91-92 specific question, just drove it really for the first time, as this was a bring a trailer purchase (brake lines rusted out). I am getting a clunking sound when I accelerate/decelerate which I haven't experienced with my 62, FZJ80, or 100. I have read that with FJ80's (91-92) this clunk is SOP and I should simply "embrace the clunk". Is that the general consensus?

I would give it a 90% chance the drive flanges are beginning to strip. Mine clunked horribly coming off the gas, but not with the CDL engaged. Pulled off the dust cap to find this:

Thanks for the feedback, I tested this AM and engaged the CDL. My clunking did stop when accelerating/decelerating wiht the CDL engaged. However I noticed that when I had the CDL engaged and made a turn going approx 5-10 miles an hour the front was making a binding sound, is that normal? On the drive flanges does that repair involve replacing both the flanges and the drive shaft? Is this in issue that occurs often in both the front and rear? Again, thanks for the feedback.

Very normal. The CDL prevents the vehicle from turning smoothly on pavement.

The stripped-flange problem is confined to the front, and the rears seem to be pretty stout.

Unfortunately, the only "fix" is replacing the birfields and drive flanges. Doing so is 90% of the way into a front axle rebuild, so you might as well do the complete service. It builds character, I promise.

@cruiseroutfit and @beno were able to hook me up with all the parts I needed, and now I am clunk-free.

Noted and digesting...haha. So that clunking sound I hear that I believe is coming from the rear is actually the front axel not the rear since engaging the CDL stops the clunking?

Very likely. You can inspect the flanges in less than 5 minutes.

I originally suspected bad u-joints in the rear, but after the rebuild they are silent. Slack builds up in the driveline, and when you go from accelerating to decelerating, the whole thing unwinds and it feels like a clunk under you.

Are the comments below from Curtis on MUD from another thread likely referencing the same drive flange issue that you are describing?

I'm tellin' ya: 91-92 80's clunk. Put it in reverse, "Slam-clunk!" Put it back in drive, "Slam-clunk!" Let off the gas anything other than as gently as possible, "clunk." Get back on the gas, "clunk." Clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk!

It's generally believed that it's just a result of all the accumulated AWD slop, and, in fact, I'm starting to think the mysterious VC in the later models is there for no other reason than to reduce this.

80 series(91-92): Embrace the clunk.

62 series(88-90): Fear the clunk.
