I am trying to add the AC compressor back to my 3FE (from a '88 FJ-62) transplant, but struggling to understand how the AC compressor mounts.

Does AC run on a different belt than the PS?

It looks like the PS belt might have a different tensioner than the AC?

A good picture of the passenger side of the 3FE might be worth a thousand words if anyone has one...

Thank you!

I don't have a picture, but this might help fill in one piece of the puzzle for you:

The AC compressor belt only goes around the compressor, the pulley on the compressor mounting bracket, and the crankshaft pulley.

Just for more confusion, my 1989 FJ62 is not at home, but I am certain it has 2 idler pulleys. The reason is, I recently replaced the bearings in both of them. So the set up is more like Beno shows for the later 3FE.

Hmmm... not showing that on my side Andy. Shows to be of the earlier set up. Unless you have a super secret later 3F-E.

I have a second 3FE in the garage from an 89 and it has the 2 idler pulleys as well. THe pulleys are slightly different from each other but use the same bearing inside.

I'll be using my FJ62 over the weekend and try and get a pic. As you know the front of an FJ62 motor is a crowded mess, so I doubt pictures will do it justice.

mine too; from an 88...block number jives with dom of body.

2nd idler doesn't get incorporated until 1991 according to the EPC.

The EPC has been known to be incorrect every once in awhile.

The belts are different between the earlier 3F-E and the 3F-E in the 1991-7/1992 FJ80's as well.

Beno...you need to fly out for some hand's on CE. Say, end of October?

The 3FE in the garage may allow for better photography?

My block # corresonds to an '88 3FE, and has the idler that mounts to the pass side engine mount and water pump, w/ no AC compressor bracket installed.

I wonder how the idler that beno and Slow Left show mounts?

Thanks all!

You obviously have not seen my garage.

Once I move the FJ40, the 2F, the pile of cylinder heads, the D60, the 3 SM465s, and the 3 sets of leaf springs, THEN I might be able to get helpful pics.

no. the early and late 3FE brackets are the same height, just different enough at the joint betwixt the ps mount and ac mount to not be swappable w/o swapping the other-either set will work AS A SET AS LONG AS one were to utilize the correct component for the bracket(most specific to the ac pumps- the ps pump appear to be mountable in either bracket albeit with some minor creativity)). there is an idler that secures to the ps bracket and is adjustable in a vertical axis that tensions the ac; then there is the bracket mounted to the mount and h2o pump with the ps belt tensioner idler which moves in a much more horizontal plane...

I can't help you answer that question...I've given you everything I've got on the topic, I think...but the other fellas posting up here are giving you helpful information/advice.

Best of luck, no doubt you'll get it all sorted out!

look at these...the fj80 mount and ac bracket with fj80 idlers. the horizontal sliding idler is similar t

o the fj62, which was hard to take shots of buttoned up. the lower fj80 ac idler is very different than the fj62 ac idler, which is mounted to the ps bracket and the ac bracket and slides vertically, as I said above. the fj80 bracket also has an additional idler fixed to the ac bracket which the fj62 does not. BUT, the fj62 does have 2 separate idlers and brackets...note the different bolt pattern on the ac mount for the pump, and the stepped bosses where it bolts to the ps bracket

you can just barely make out the pulley bolt for the ac idler up behind the ps idler in the last pic...
