Those are the new(er) military Baja T/A's. Slightly different design than the civvie version of the same name. Military has been running them for a few years, but it's only now making it's way out to the civilian market.

Trail Worthy Fab had them up on their site for a while, has since took them down, not sure why.

TWF ran out of the JFP (Just Fawkin' Paint) Goodyears, and offered to upgrade me to the Baja T/A's for no additional price. Couldn't say no to that. :lol:

They ran out of them..... the military still isn't releasing massive quantities of these things or the MTRs for that matter.

Too bad, I think I like their design much better.

Got any tread shots? I suspect it resenbles the projects, dezert guys love those things for the thick sidewalls... Have a few buddy's in SoCal who race with those, used they are a pretty $$$.

Didn't have one on hand, so had to run out and grab one.

Interesting tidbit, the center lugs are all different lengths. They seem to get progressively longer then smaller all the way around the tire (repeats a couple of times).

will the factory power steering handle the 37s? how are they on the freeway?
 
yes... 37's are so 6yrs ago.... Power steering will be fine unless ur slow crawling, then it's time for hydro assist...

E- hows the street ride as 93 asked? Did they balance out well? Did you do the inserts?

Freeway? Easily. There are plenty of folks running 37's just fine when wheeling as well.

Street ride is great. They're only slightly noisier than my AT's, which were pretty dang quiet.

I haven't balanced them yet. Had two rebuilt by Les Schwab (one needed to be spun on the rim, the other was leaking air). Need to have the other two rebuilt and see where that puts me. I'm putting it off as I really do need to split them and paint them up properly, would like to get that done before paying Schwabby to tear 'em apart and put them back together.

I get a nasty wobble around 35 that goes away by 40 MPH, but I suspect that's due to the two tires that need to be redone.

I'm running the PVC inserts, seems to work fine. Drove around a bit with little PSI, bead didn't pop off so assuming it's working. ;)
 
i dont do much slow crawling, but i am worried about turning while stopped on pavement. and how to get em balanced. found a guy that sells 70-90% tread for 100 each. found pro comp wheels for 77 each. so a little over 700 not including mounting and balancing. or gearing. four 345's would run far over that minus wheels!!! so it seems like a steal, and from what ive read/seen its almost not necessary to need a spare, and its hard to pop a bead while aired down. a friend had em on his 2nd gen 4runner and ran em down to 2psi in the sand no problems at all


what inserts are you referring to?

No issues when on pavement. If they were 40's, maybe, but probably not even then.

These are cheap, that's the huge advantage to them. Be careful with planning on not running a spare, they can (and have) been busted. Less likely to due to construction design, but it can still happen.

Either your friend was running beadlocks, or his 2nd gen 4 running was stripped weight wise. I don't think even a 4 runner could run 2 PSI and not pop a bead. Most recommendations I've seen say not to run less than 20 PSI if you aren't bead locked.

The reason is that the vast majority of 16.5" rims do not have a safety bead. This means the bead pops far more easily at low PSI. I've heard that you can find 16.5" rims with a safety bead, but they seem to be as rare as hens teeth. More commonly someone just has one welded in, no big deal if you've got some steelies and a steady hand. Even with a safety bead, no way you're gonna run 2 PSI.

16.5" rims (as mentioned) have no safety bead. This means that there's nothing to hold the tire in place if you're air pressure drops. Stock the hummer rims come with magnesium or rubber run flats, but you can't run those and air down (else you end up on the run flat, and will destroy the tire in the process). Most people either cut down the run flat, or run a PVC insert.

It sits inside the tire. Think of it this way, you have the rim sandwiching the outside of the sidewalls (so it can't pop off outwards), and the PVC sits on the inside of the sidewalls (so it can't move inwards). When you bolt down the outer ring, it compresses the tire down and keeps it from moving, as there's a huge amount of pressure on the sidewall (between the steel and PVC insert).

So it looks something like:

Rim | Tire | PVC | Tire | Rim

I'm guessing it's a tree root or other piece of organic matter that has decided to become one with the sidewall of his tire.
