37" military OZ tires

Whos getting the new baja ta's?? I am really on the line about getting military tires. If I do I will get the twf bad ass wheels with them. I just cant make up my mind if I want to.

TWF just called me. I pulled the trigger on a set a while back, and they're getting ready to ship them out to me. They're out of the Goodyear MTR's, and only have the Baja's left. They upgraded me to the Baja's, no charge.

Can't complain about that service.

According to them, the Baja's flex better on the sidewall.

tested results/impressions of 37 military's:

1- high speed gravel-washboards:
- easily hit 65-70mph with good control (by comparison the 295toyos and 33.5 BFG Mts were much squirrelier at 55-60mph. Im expecting even more improvement when the Foxes go on. These comparisons were all with stock Tokikos and OME meds.

2- comfort- running same pressures: a noticable difference in smoothness and rollover on potholes- ruts- etc. Aired down would allow the added volume of air in a 37 to absorb that much more shock. Probably easier on suspension components, engine mounts and passengers who refuse to wear seatbelts/support devices..
WTF? She's not wearing her seat belt!

3- grip: somewhere between bfg mt- and toyo at.

4- mud shedding- spits out mud pretty well- doesnt cake up and stick in lugs. thumbs up- surprised.

5- weight (negatives)- two thumbs down. even with 4.88s these heavy suckers really add to the extra work tranny has to do to move them from standstill on inclines. Reverse is horrendous. imho--- a great combo in terms of gearing/tires was the 4.88s with skinny 33-34" tires and a lighter vehicle. Makes our behemoth cruisers feel fairly nimble on hills. I cant imagine how aweful these would feel on 6000+ lb cruisers and stock gears. (im at about 5500lbs with new shoes and 4.88s.)

5a- weight (positives)- 300lbs at axle height (difference vs stock alloys/light 33s) feels more stable when in situations that put all weight no 2 or 3 wheels with one in the air.

6- hwy cruising- quieter than most MTs by alot- but not quite an AT.
- weight on hills is noticable even with lightish rig- again- gotta get used to 2400rpm hill climbs at 55mph on longish avg (5%+ highway climbs)...........probably 45-50mph with 6000+lb cruisers. By comparison the light rig could pull hills at any speed with the 4.88/skinny 33.5 combo at 2000-2400rpms.

7- Handling- more similar to toyo (my favorite on hwy ) vs BFG mt. two thumbs up and surprised again.

Overall- surprised how much i like the positives and can definitely live with negatives given my personal setup and uses. Would love to see if the relatively lighter trxxus mts/stock alloys compared in terms of balancing out- mud shedding- grip- snow-etc.....but not sure if i could live with that huge of a price difference even if all things were the same. Cant beat the price of these given all the positives.......and im very curious how the 37Bajas compare as they could be a serious contender in the price department.

I wasn't aware they had gotten any MTR's in yet.

I know they have MTs and the Guard Dogs. If i'd known that I might have held off a while. (they aren't listed on their site)

Too little too late though I just scored a good set of 38.7 military milchelin XMLs that are coming in next week.

I am not having the same good service experience with Trailworthy - In fact I am completely frustrated at this point. I still can't get the goodyears balanced. One of the five tires I received has almost all of the tread worn off of the outer lugs and another one has three cuts/chunks missing in the side wall. I first emailed them on the 15th and they called me right back, told me to send some pictures of the bad tire and that they would take care of it. I have sent several emails since with no reply and cannot get anyone to answer the phone - very frustrating.

I am so mad that the Bajas were listed a week after I placed my order. I think the goodyears are a crapshoot on quality. The wheels look great but I am ready to throw these tires in the trash.

I've heard their service can be slow. Seems to be fairly common for this type of shop, and I know that they are very busy.

2 weeks is a long time, but not extraordinarily long. Took me about that long to get everything sorted with my 4x4Labs bumper (had some question), but was worth it in the end.

Hope it works out for ya tho, keep us up to date on what's happening.

If it helps you can tell them several future orders ride on your results. I know if you can't get them to work there is no way I could do it. I'll buy you a beer if I can make it to a meeting since you volunteered to be the tire guinea pig in our area. Reading the results I think I'd skip the recentered rims and get the baja tas.

I have decided against going this route and have ordered regular tires. Still curious as to how the baja's turn out though. Looks like it can be a better thread pattern and are d rated so should flex better. I figured by the time I had the wheels how I wanted from them and tires and such that it was not any cheaper for me to go the military route.

I still haven't gotten my replacement tires from trailworthy - they were supposed to send two but then they sold their entire inventory of the oz's first. I am curious about the bajas too, but my experience with the goodyears has not been positive.

Isn't that part of the problem with directional tread? Works better going forward than backwards, so when I'm in reverse two are going the right direction

This might be kind of off topic, but im willing to bet one of you know the answer:

Im looking at moving up to 37's, either MT or BFG, both being 16.5" rim size.

In regards to the aftermarket steelie's like Pro Comp and others in the 16.5" variety, do these rims come with the formed ridge just inboard the outside lip to prevent the bead from coming unseated like 15", 16", and so on rim sizes?

No they dont, which is the problem with 16.5 wheels, is the fact they dont have the safety bead.

with most 16.5 wheels, there are some mythical stock chevy rims that have them.

My AR-23's have the safety bead, I know this because of how much of a pain the shop had seating the tires in the first place. I'd like to use them to go the the 37's, but everyone on this thread seems to be saying a 9.75" wide wheel is too wide for these tires.
