Need help to fix/correct the transfer case shift linkage on my 1976 SA FJ40 with 3-speed transmission and t-case.@Downey pointed out in my thread (here, post #2)there appears to be a mis match of parts used. I’m dropping transmission this weekend and need help identifying correct parts to source/order to fix.

It appears there is a missing ‘Shaft Link Support‘ #36365-60010 letter A in image below. However, in the exploded diagram below (Version 1.0) it’s not listed but it’s listed in Version 2). Also, letter B appears to be connected wrong as diagram calls for ‘Shoe Front Drive Link’ #36343-60010. Exploded view can be found here or two versions below.

Posting a video to show how it’s working now. When watching:

The shifter starts in H2, then moves to H4 then to 4L. Then from 4L to H4 then H2.

Adding video showing linkage to switch from H2 to H4; engaging front drive shaft.

Thanks. I’ve got a few parts already ordered... trying to make sense of a few components and mechanisms. I’ll PM you to sync up on parts etc.

Does anyone have an installed image of the the below diagram set up for a 3 speed transmission to 3 speed transfer case? The shift fork case on mine has hole on top for and additional shaft 36365 and lever 36357. However, the fork and shaft are identical between two versions of schematic 1 and 2. Do I need to swap out cover to the one highlighted in red circle?

Unfortunately I don’t have an answer to your question. I have version 2... the OEM three speed case linkage (with my ‘74 4 speed).

Version 1 is considered an upgrade over it... I still need a couple parts to be able to convert to it.

While you’re in there, I’d modify the shift plate to allow Low 2wd. It’s handy to have :D

You are confused because there are 2 set ups with the difference being the length of the shift arm for the 4wd. The short arm(which you have) has the boss on top of housing for the connector arms for the shifter. If you had the linkage system for the short arm set up then the boss would be used. You have the shifter and linkage for the long arm 4wd rail. No big deal, should work fine. The hi-low arm need to be bent flat and twisted a hair but other than that your set up looks good, does it function properly ?

FWIW, a major difference between the two configurations is the location of the detent on the hi-lo shift lever that orients the upper t-case shift lever, especially if you begin to mix and match parts.

Thanks. The shifting mechanisms are a bit confusing with the different versions between 4 speed and 3 speed, magnetic, vacuum etc... Since my truck is ‘76 with 3 speed, it has the later mechanism. The system works fine but looks strange as it appeard parts were missing. I think I’ve got all the right new parts on order to bring this to spec.

Not sure if these help or not. I was still sourcing parts at this point.
