About 3 hours on the bike tonight.

First half hour was spent re-building the carbs. New gaskets, needles and seats, pilots and main jets etc..... The next 2.5 hours was spent wiring. I had a friend of mine at Polaris Industries a few weeks ago go through the factory wiring schematic and eliminate every relay and safety device. Took a while, but un-wrapped and cut everything up...re-wired. Hooked up some fuel....I have never heard this thing run before, until tonight.....and it had been 8 years since the previous owner had started it. Actually sounds pretty bad ass with the straight pipes ;p Thing ran and idled perfect, very happy.

Hoping to clean up the wiring tomorrow, make that look all pretty and get that tucked away. Start hooking up all the misc. small stuff, but still hoping to wrap up the bike project this weekend.......then back to the 45. The last pic is just some of the wiring that was eliminated.....it does not include the pile of relays and other little boxes laying in the corner.

Nothing against Yamaha but if you tricked out the motor sidecover/logo and covered up the logo, you would really throw off any gawkers and leave them guessing. Nice work, you definite make productive use of your time.

I agree with the Yamaha thing.....I have nothing against them either, but if I show up to some biker event with Yamaha still embossed on the side....the thing is probably going to end up in the campfire

I do have plans to get rid of that, probably going to pull both side covers and mill the yamaha out. Either nothing on the side or might mill up another aluminum plate and press it in.

Thanks, Matt

Kinda looks like a old 650 triumph hardtail, neat paint job Matt.

I really like the look of the motor also. I believe when Yamaha designed this motor they used a Triumph motor as there template. It's just different, not the typical V-twin you see in everything now days...I guess that's what makes it cool. Different....kinda like a landcruiser ;)

Thanks, Matt

Matt,
We've got to get you on that show "Build or Bust". If you haven't seen it (I would guess you haven't as you seem to be in the garage a bit), you spend 30 days in this guys chopper shop, they order all the parts and you have the 30 days to complete the bike without their help. If you finish the bike is yours. If you don't they get to keep it. They don't help you, but rather stand around telling you how you're never gonna finish, how you suck etc. I've only seen it a couple times, and only one guy finished the bike on time. I would just love to see you finish the bike in like 28 days and ask them "What can I build now? Got any fj45's around?"

But add up the hours Matt actually put in on the bike, 2 here, 3 there, a weekend now and then. Those guys work 20 days, for about 8 hours each day. He would have it done in the first week and be riding around the shop for the rest of the episode.

That is why he would not make the cut for the show, because it would not be ‘good TV’. The goof balls on the show could badger him all the time, but they would not get to him. There are very few things that really rattle this guy’s cage...

Bike looks great Matt man!

You are never going to finish this 45 pickup...you suck!
See how easily you are distracted????
Why don't you just go back to shoveling snow!?

Did that work? ;)

I've never seen that show, "build or bust" but I don't watch tv so that's probably why. I know of a few of those chopper shows since I've seen a few bits and pieces over at friends houses, but that's about it.

Hell, I'd give it a try tho....I've built a lot of different things, but this is my first bike. I might want to get a few miles on this one first...make sure it doesn't fall apart ;)

Does the frame come pre-made or do you have to build that from scratch?

Matt

About 3.5 hours yesterday on the bike and about 3 hours tonight.

Yesterday was spent cleaning up the wiring and making that look all pretty. Didn't take any pics because nothing special about it, just cut, solder and shrink wrap.

Tonight was spent doing a lot of misc. stuff. Installed the idler sprocket assembly, clutch cable, sediment bolt installed, fuel line, hooked up shifter linkage, adjusted chain tension, kick stand, and all sorts of little crap I can't remember....

I still have to cover the seat, the piece of leather I got from the local saddle shop is to small so I am going to have to round up another piece. The piece I got was brown, but thinking I want the seat black so that's ok..get what I want now.

Few little things to do tomorrow I think, light bulb hook up, tail light hook up after I get a couple connectors at work, but I don't think it will be a full day on the bike. She starts and runs like a top, had her up on blocks tonight and I was shifting through the gears....everything seemed to work ok. Of course will know more this spring when I'm going down the highway and stuff starts to fall apart.

Hopefully some pics of the 45 tomorrow???

About 2.5 hours on the bike today and about 2.5 on the lpb.

Not a lot to do on the bike, little more wiring on the taillight, cleaned a few things up. But, until I get the black leather and foam, pretty much done for now.

Dug the box out and went to work on that. The front panel was bent forward very bad. There was no way I was going to be able to pound it straight while it was on the box. So, I drilled out all the spot welds and pulled it out. I was then able to put it on the floor and pound it straight. I actually had to use some blocks of wood and step on it to bow it back. Actually got it pretty decent. Inside of the box is going to be Sem'd so any little imperfections will be covered up. The other side faces the cab, so you don't see much of that anyway. I'm sure I will still block it out many times since I am anal retentive.

Pounded on the sides of the box for over an hour, just using the hammer and dolly to take out any little dents here an there. Tomorrow I'm sure there will be more of that, probably try to get the front panel blasted where I pulled it out and primed and welded back in. Starting welding up cracks in the bed.

Took a few glamour shots of bike and a drove the lpb out and took a few shots......to get us back in the mood ;)
