I have done a search but couldnt find any write ups or pics of a 2nd alternator setup on a 80. Any help or pics would be appreciated. thanks

what would be the advantage to a second alt. ass opposed to a larger (mean green) alt.? are there any

the only advantage is that instead of 1 alt charging 2 batteries you have an alt for each battery, and you can use the second alt as a backup in an emergency

I installed a Mean Green alternator about a year ago. They do NOT put out 200 amps as advertised. I measured the output at various RPM's and I cant remember the exact data but the max output is right around 80 amps (close to stock). They fit fine and work OK but you won't get any extra output so what's the point? I have no patience for products that don't do what they say they do  .

Mean Green is a waste of money, as manrigdude reports, there have been others who have had the same experience. I haven't ever heard of a second alternator before?

kirk--who is doing the LT-1 swap into his 80--is talking about dual alternators, though he wasn't very specific on the details.

Maybe he'll chime in on this one.

bjowett IIRC is putting a higher output alternator into his 80 project...some others have put higher output alternators in as well, IIRC.

I thought I saw a pic or two of some dual alternator setups from 'down under'. Seems like it was for some expedition races or something.

I have plenty of room for the second alternator with my new engine. I really think a stock 80 would benefit from 2. the OEM alternator is very smaller in diameter and has to work alot harder to put out the same amps as a bigger Diameter GM. A single high output (200a) alternator in the factory toyota case would be too risky in terms of reliablity for me. I have one 200 amp GM on the v8 truck right now(very reliable much larger in size and windings). I will probably add a second welder/alternator this fall.
