Hey everyone,

Recently picked up a lj78 and feel as if the car doesn’t have its full power. The only weird part is it doesn’t seem to be every time I drive it, but majority of the time it does feel sluggy.

I’ve read through some forums here and believe I may be on the right track in assuming it’s either a vacuum line or potentially a dodgy MAF sensor but wanted to hear some further opinions.

In neutral it seems to rev fine, it also seems to be not so bad once it’s at speed and within the turbo band. I can still get up to about 100km/h on the freeway.

When it’s bad, if I stop at the traffic lights even on a flat road, the only way I can gain traction, or enough traction to get up to speed is to manually put it into L, then 2, then into D. If I stay in drive rpm seem to hit a “roof” around 1,900-2,000rpms.

4WD low and high still work great. Idle has sometimes been a little funny just on the initial start, not really much smoke comes out the back unless it’s just been started there may be a small amount of smoke.

If I try to climb any type of hill I find myself losing that much speed that I sometimes have to pullover. The hills aren’t crazy but can sometimes be steep, but even coming into the hill at 100 I still don’t seem to have enough power to make it up.

My turbo light isn’t on 24/7, just when it’s up above 2k rpm (as it should be). Sounds to me like it’s spooling correctly and I don't see any apparent leaks or am able to hear any obvious hose leaks.

I don’t have turbo gauges so aren’t able to check to see if I have low boost although I don’t think that’s the problem.

Not entirely sure on my next steps, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
-R

** I do need to double check but I believe the overdrive light may be turning on and off sometimes while driving.

from driving these old tech diesel trucks you are perfectly describing how it is to drive them....
its not a traction issue... thats a tires on the road thing, your problem would be in the auto trans or engine if anything

Yeah, sounds pretty normal.

When the air intake temp sensor warms up (like warm day, or engine has been sitting parked hot for a bit heatsoaking), the ECU pulls a ton of power. Honestly not sure if it pulls injection timing or fuel; but definitely becomes sluggish. Power is huge on a 10C day compared to 30C day for example.

But also, the turbo is honestly a bit large (turbine specifically) for these motors and doesn't really do much on OEM motor until about 2500rpm.

Finally, if you delete the EGR system and remove the main throttle plate in throttle body (leaving shaft and TPS sensor alone!), the motor gets a lot more torquey off the line. It's actually getting some air then, lol.

Thanks, I’ll look into getting some of these things done. However, seeing other people run larger wheels and platforms on these makes me think there may be something a little more going on with my 2l-te.

Genuinely, if I’m in drive and plant my foot from the traffic lights, I move at about 5km/h, It’s only really ever managed to get speed if there was a downhill in this situation.

This also happens after an hour or two of driving. So the car should definitely be at operating temp.

Surely it wasn’t this underpowered from factory? I also would’ve thought that I’d be able to climb up some light hills with O/D enabled. Which honestly would only be possible in 4WD currently. If in drive it just comes to a complete stop not very long into the small incline- even with a run up.

Thanks!

Yeah, reading again, this seems pretty bad.

When has fuel filter last been changed?

How does it start (indicates compression and injection problems)?

Take some pictures of the boost hose from intake manifold to boost sensor. This is certainly number one item to cause massive loss in power.

Check ATF color and level with motor running. How is it?

Check engine light? Jump t1 to te1 in diagnostic connector. Codes at check engine light?

Brakes dragging? When have all diff and tcase fluids been checked?

Tire pressures?

Etc.
