I am installing a 1981 2F (large cap distributor) in a 1971 FJ40. The motor is completely desmogged with headers. I have the Petronix coil from the original F engine. Will that work? Do I need the coil with the igniter or resister?

With that FJ60 distributor, you will want a late 40 or 60 coil and igniter.

FWIW, I had trouble with my ignition circuit, which turned out to be a pair of bad capacitors (thank you @Engineer8000) on the circuit board. I initially tried to replace the ignition circuit with a Pertronix setup, which should have worked, but I never had any luck with it.

Is the coil/igniter exchangeable between early and late 2F’s? The = <1980 igniter is physically different than the 81-83. Looking for the correct one for my 1981 2F.

Pretty much any coil will work. But you do need the ignitor. You do not need a resistor.

Mark...

Yes, for sure if it is at least a 1979 igniter. '79 is the year that Toyota changed to an electronic distributor for U.S. market 40's. I am running an FJ60 big-cap distributor on my 12/79 FJ40, with the stock coil and igniter. If I have time later, I will take a photo of it like @Pighead did of his.

What I am finding is that the used OEM igniters are similar in price as a new MSD igniter. Is there a reason not to go with a new MSD igniter?

MSD list only the "CD" type as compatible with points style distributors

which isn't the offroad type MSD advertises. Yes, I know you can mate other igniters, it's done all the time, but those are street cars, not offroad trucks. Do you really want to limit your Land Cruiser to the pavement?

I'd get a used, non-working igniter, send it to @Engineer8000 for refurbishment, install it and be done with it. You know this will work and you can move on to more exciting problems, like finding a jack handle.

Thanks. However, isn’t the large cap distributor electronic and no points.

Malleus,
Thanks for the advice. Now to source a decently priced igniter.

It's not a technology question, it's a matter of taste, I guess. I wouldn't do it on my 40, but I would on someone else's Jeep.

When I put the 87 2F into my 74, I kept the stock 74 coil location. You can see I had to drill one hole in the bracket. I was lucky and just used the igniter that was already on the 87 engine.

I'm showing this part number good for 9/77-7/80 2F in the FJ40. 1/79-7/80 shows a sub . I've had my 3/79 FJ40 for twenty seven years a d know the history back to 1993. Interesting it has an igniter with 78 on but the correct original part number for 79.
