I'm not an expert, but since you just bought it I'd suggest a good valve adjustment, check timing, and trouble shoot your carb. Good luck! When properly maintained these engines are great work horses (definitely never race horses, though!).

X3 on the secondary not opening... I run about 60 just on the primary and then can mash it and the secondary opens and away we go. Don't have the guts to see how fast but it has hit 75-80 indicated (worn 32's). Very noticeable when the secondary opens on mine.

Does the 78 have points?

Mine doesn't. Should be the semi -electonic dizzy for '78. Unless the change occured mid-year.

I did the secondary diaphram test on mine when I thought I had a problem. You just put a paperclip on the shaft that's sticking out of the secondary. Drive the truck at freeway speed and then check the clip. If it moved ..... your secondary is working. I think this is the test that Mark is refering to. (?)

How do you know your second barrel opens up? I've never seen a drop go through mine.

Are you looking at your speedo or at a gps? 33" tires are a little bigger than stock. you might be going faster than you think.
