'72 FJ40 project with 2F -- Will I be able to simply bolt all my 3 speed components (bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate, etc.) to my newly rebuilt 2F? Thanks.

Jess. No problem. If you use the F flywheel.

I'll need to look again but, I think the 3 speed flywheel that I have is missing a tooth. Might be time for a new flywheel and clutch kit. Any suggestions for who has the best price/quality 3 speed clutch kit?

If you go that route, get a 4 speed flywheel and clutch assembly. The diaphragm design is better than the three finger. Or pick up an F flywheel and run whatcha got. The disc itself is the same AFAIK.

I do have a 4 speed flywheel that appears to be in good shape. Are you saying I can use the 3 speed bell housing with the 4 speed flywheel, disc and pressure plate bolted to my 3 spd tranny? Thanks for providing your direction.

I think you would use the 3 speed disc, as the 4 speed has a different spline count to match the 4 speed transmision.

You can use any flywheel and bellhousing you want, but you have to use the appropriate pressure plate for the flywheel you choose. The 4sp PP won't work with the 3sp flywheel and visa versa.

Hi All:

X2 what "Pinhead" says, with the addition that if you switch to the four speed clutch parts you will need the four speed clutch fork, fork pivot, throw-out bearing, and bearing retainer.

Good luck!

Alan

Not in the USA, not behind the F or 2F....clutch discs, just like transmission input shafts, are splined the same...

The transmission/engine combo that has a different splined input shaft is any transmission behind the b series diesel. They are longer, and have a fine spline.

The gas trucks in the USA all used the same splined clutch disc.

The bellhousings interchange between the 3 spd & 4?

Thanks, Steve, Didn't know that.

I held a couple of throw out bearings up the other night I THOUGHT were from 3 v 4 speed and they appeared the same. What should I look for on the bearings and retainers/sleeves as far as differences?

I want to pull this up because I thought different bell housing were required for the swap.

I have an 8/73 40 with a stock F engine and 3 speed (new clutch too). From what I am reading here in this post, I can pull the F and swap in a 2f and use my stock F flywheel, clutch, bell housing, and tranny. No modification required? Simply unbolt the F and slide a 2 F in its place and bolt it back up using the stock flywheel, clutch and bell housing from the F.

Yes. The back of the engine is the same on the F and 2F, so both types of flywheels and bellhousings will fit on either engine. If you swap transmissions, you have to use the appropriate bellhousing. If you use a particular flywheel, you have to use the matching pressure plate.

I took some shots side by side of the old finger style and newer diaphragm style clutch

either set up works as a whole set but you cant mix and match

everything was different except maybe the bearings even the little pivot post and throw arm for the diaphragm was different.

All OEM parts can be had from CDAN about 400 bucks for everything but the flywheel including the rear main seal.
Cruiser Dan at American Toyota Phone is 1-800-432-6668 ext. 8

your cheapest option would be to get a ring gear for your flywheel --you can change just the gear or have it done when you have the flywheel turned

getting the flywheel turned is pretty cheap

soak the oil pan bolts with pen oil you can squirt into the holes from the top

oh yeah, also get a oil pan seal while you are at it

By the way--As I was told when I posted up on the same thing, It is not a 3 speed or 4 speed clutch it is simply and earlier or later style clutch although the diaphragm is supposed to be superior to the 3 finger pressure plate. Having said that plenty of the old style did long service eh?

all the p/ns for the later style are in my post and CDAN is a great guy to deal with if you phone American Toyota and ask for his extension you will get the parts in a couple days

Dont forget a clutch alignment tool--I made one in my post from an old shaft but you can get plastic ones too

post up pics eh?
