Hello, just hit 50K on my wifes GX and hearing the brake tab squel a bit, so I thought I'd replace the pads.

Having just found out the transmission is sealed, I thought I'd ask here before I discover any other hidden gems when I already have the vehicle jacked up and the wheels off. Do the caliper pistons, front OR rear, require a special tool to compress them? I know on my Honda, it takes a small metal block with a ratchet to compress the pistons by screwing them into the caliper.

Also, the fella at the dealer said you needed a scan tool to get the caliper to release, which I know is often the case with cars that have the little electronic parking brake. But I suspect that our GX, which has a manual foot lever brake, does not have any such issue and that it was a bogus answer to get me to bring the car in for a $1000 (yes, $1000) brake service. And that was for PADS only front and rear.

Any info, or a link to a maintenance manual for this model year (I wish they had manuals ready for purchase right after release) would be amazing. Thanks ladies and gents.

You don't need any GX or Lexus-specific tool for the brakes. You do need something to compress the pistons back into the calipers. I've seen people use C-clamps or similar clamps instead of the dedicated caliper tools.

Some places rent tools also. I think Auto Zone, and others. Just not sure if they'd have something to compress the pistons.

No special tools but the rear parking brake is a drum built into the back of the rear rotors. There is a small hole on the rotor surface that mates to the rim and you need to stick a flathead in and turn a crank to get them to release, even without the brake set. I yanked on mine like an idiot and screwed all the pad pins up. Had to have it towed in embarrassingly. My mechanic didn't give me too much crap but he could have : \

If I would have read the FSM I would have saved myself a tow. You can find a copy linked to in the sticky link at the top of the 460 forum - GX 460 Manuals

Tranny defiantly not sealed. Get a flush at 60K and you should be good. Lexus GX 460 Maintenance Service Interval | Edison Service Center ^ - https://www.lexusofedison.com/lexus-gx-460-maintenance-service-interval.html
