I don't think it would be fair to compare a 2003 100 to a 2011 highlander and then say Toyota lost its way. The 100 series would still today put many vehicles to shame when it comes to refinement as it is designed to be a flagship and totally different levels of engineering with all due respect to the highlander . The 200 LC is not blingy at all, most people would not guess how much it costs if you asked them. Now if that 2011 highlander was a 200 series instead then i am sure you would have had a different opinion on modern Toyota's.
 
I really don't think it has anything to do with design, as it does price. A fully loaded Sequoia is near the $70k mark, and the 200/570 is $81.5k and $90k (respectively).

I think that they really priced themselves out of the market. Buyers, at least around where I live, want people to know how much money they have; they buy Range Rovers (all over the damn place), Escalades, G-Series, etc. If you (the public) is going to spend all that money, they want everyone to know about it. I blame social media (Hey, look at me and look, here's a picture of the car my hubby just bought!), where everyone wants to make everyone else envious. The 200 does not fit that bill.

Me personally, I like the below the radar, not in-your-face-look-at-how-loaded-I-am 200/570.

Now, that being said, the styling is not perfect, but it should not be to blame for the low sales numbers. Look worldwide; they sell like hotcakes. The U.S. market is all about materialism and vanity, and that, in my humble opinion, is why the numbers are low.

well, I think this thread has started to lose focus a little bit, but oh well, guess I'll jump in. I've owned a grip of LC's and I know it's the cool thing to say "The old one's are the only real LC's" as if somehow that gives you some street cred or something. I've owned 2 100 series, loved them both. Here's my point in a nut shell, if you drove a 200 and a 100 back to back, off-road, on the street, or on the moon, it's not even close. The 200 is just a way better rig, just that simple. Bling, what bling, unless people know what an LC is most people have no idea what my rig cost, I've had people tell me they think it's proly almost 40k brand new:) So bling factor=about the same as a 100 or 80, IMO. Off-road ability= above the 100 forsure, 80 series locked would proly take it. Now if you just want to talk about the 200 series being priced out of reach of a lot of people that would love to own one, I would agree with you 100%, but then again building the world's best SUV isn't cheap;) just my 2 cents, now let's see some more pics of this new 200 series!!!

Exactly! Similarly, if the LC 200 TDV8 were available here, I wouldn't be fretting over my Land Rover being in the shop again.... in regard to so many cool vehicles, the US does not feel like the "land of the free" when the rest of the world has them but it's actually illegal to bring them here.

Yep your right. I did not have a valid argument comparing the 100 to a 2013 Highlander.

great point. I feel that it is blinged out because of the wooden dash. Then again, the import tariffs are sky high (Land cruisers are manufactured in japan?) and, in order for Toyota to make a profit, don't they have to charge full price?

Yep, that is what I was trying to crack at. A affordable 300 series configured like a 70! Will it happen? plausible (probably unlikely)?

That's why like me you buy a 3 year old LX570 with less then 30k miles with perfect service records and in new condition for $52k ;). If a vehicle is built to last well over 500k+ miles with normal service, why buy new?

Great point. Personally my lowest expectation is for the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series to be reliable and, built to last. I also hope the Land Cruiser 300 series US spec is built with a little off-roading in mind! I wonder if it has cameras similar to a Range Rover that monitors your ground clearance on your center console's GPS screen?

Love Top Gear, proly the best show on tv, or should I say, was the best show on tv! I can't help but notice based on your comments maybe you haven't taken a good hard look at a 200 series LC. It has all the camera's just like the Rover you posted, Toyota put plenty of off-road goodies on it, i.e. KDSS, Offroad turn assist, CRAWL mode etc... Would I love it to come with 35's and lockers, of course, but that's what the aftermarket is for! Give the 200 another look, it's not just a large Highlander, it's a badass off-road SUV...
 
I would add that it is not always the manufactures choosing what we get to have access to here in the states. The EPA is generally the issue where diesel is concerned, and NHTSA causing problems with safety regulations that also keep quite a few really cool vehicles out of the US market. There is also some import taxes that can effect things as well.

Yep, one of these days, I should test drive a 200! Overall, I'm pretty bias against them and, have only been in the Lexus version once (back in 2013ish?) overall, my biggest concern is the more advanced the electronics are = the more that can go wrong in those high miles.
 
I too feel like the electronics may ultimately be the Achilles heal but they're still Toyota's (and not Land Rovers), so I remain optimistic.

I hear what your saying, I think the 200 will be among the most reliable and the electronic problems are pretty easy to diagnose. But sounds like for your needs you would be better off with a FJ40 :)

It would be interesting to see the annual sales figures for each model of USA Land Cruiser since 1985 or so. It's a well known fact that the 80 series was the best selling LC Model in history. And that was for a reason. Every model since then has seen a decline in annual sales for no other reason that each new iteration was more of a reflection of Toyota's wishfull thinking than anything based on a realistic 4WD design. IMO there comes a time when you've got to stop adding more leather, more fake wood, more silly electronics, more more mmmmmmmmmmore. And just make a reasonable 4WD. When will the quarter million dollar LC debut?
 
Please give me figures that prove the 80 sold better world wide in its best year compared to the 200 series.
