I'd like to thank James Lafeminak AKA Stainless 40/45 on IH8MUD for making this awesome plaque for winners of our Rock Chef competition.

I will be getting past winners names engraved on it and it will presented every year to the winners for bragging rights. The returned for the next winners.

Will go nicely with the shirts that Metal-tech 4X4 provides them.

So break out your camp cooking gear and get your Chef on! Only 2 more years to get qualified for our Championship of Champions at the 30th annual Rubithon!

Anyone out there going through to the Springs on Tues or Wed from Loon. I'd like another rig or 2 to join me on the trail.
Get in touch.

Bruce, Dion and Larry will be, not sure which day, Wed will have the wagons and some others. I am going in Tahoe side Wed. if you wanna run that way.

Bummer, but have fun. See you next year (with the fender protection installed!)

Hey guys, I had a couple of questions as I think I am going to give this thing a run! So this will be my first time doing Rubithon and I am pretty pumped about it as it looks like a great time with great people. I actually did the Rubicon for the first time two years ago by myself. I don't really know anyone to go with but really wanted to do it so I just ran it alone. Pretty dumb from a safety standpoint, BUT I am very fortunate to have a pretty capable rig and just took it slow and careful and sustained just a few paint scratches on the rear bumper. I entered at Loon and then camped at Buck Island and finished it and went home on day two. I would like make that same run but can't leave until Wednesday after work so I am thinking of doing the Icehouse Breakfast run. I would like to camp at Buck island again as I think it breaks the trip up nicely. I have read all the posts on here and researched the best I can before asking questions. Since this is such a big event I would like to blend in the best I can and get advice from people that have done it before. I will be driving down to the Loon Lake area Wednesday and I guess staying somewhere near the Icehouse Resort. So my questions are.....

1. Where should I stay Wednesday night? I previously camped at Loon Lake but I imagine that place will be packed..?
2. Should I drive to the end of the trail and leave my truck and trailer there and then drive my FJ to the Icehouse area Wednesday night and camp (flop) somewhere nearby?
3. Will there be spotters along the way? I am considering taking my dad but he is old and fat and I don't think getting in and out of the cruiser a bunch is his idea of a good time. Nothing against old fat people !!! He is hilarious so he still serves a purpose!!
4. Do we just flop wherever at Buck Island? Do we just flop at the Springs?

Thank you in advance for any advice! I am sure I will have a few more questions as it nears but that's all I can think of for now.

1. You can always camp right at Ice House Resort. There is the option to leave your tow rig there as well. Otherwise, Northshore is an option as is Airport Flat... Just past the turn off to hit Loon.

2. Many people do just that. As long as it is a road worthy rig, that may be a good option. Better than leaving it at the start and having to drive all the way around to get it after. There are some that actually go back to Loon vs. exiting Tahoma, but your pretty much on your own doing that.

3. There are not spotters. But by going on an organized run, you have committee guys that are right there with you to spot and help with a rock or 2 when needed. Your dad wouldn't need to get out.

4. The runs that camp at Buck pretty much stay together. Then once you get to the Springs we have the Springs, the Slabs and Dirty Dozen reserved. By the end of day 2, you won't feel like your a lone and should fit it with everyone. Thats the beauty of this run, we are are club members of TLCA regardless of where we are coming from.

In your post you mentioned your FJ. FJ's are more than welcome to join us. Keep in mind that there are not a lot of them so make sure you have any spare parts and knowledge of how to repair them. Ross Woody has brought his several time and Mark Hawley of Metal Tech 4x4 has a lot of experience with the FJC's. He'd be a great resource for you to contact on what to have. Mark leads a run of FJC every 5 years, so the next one will be at the 30th annual event in 2018.

If you want to have your shirts for you at the event, make sure you get it in by the end of the day tomorrow. Othewise you will have to pay a late fee and I will have to mail your shirts to you after the event.

Hope to see you there,
Eric

Don't forget, tomorrow is the last day to get your registrations in without paying a late fee. Also any received after tomorrow at midnight will have their shirts mailed to them after the event.

You can still sign up for Rubithon right up to at the event, you will just have to pay the late fee and your shirts will be mailed. Also, no promises for food availability.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks!

@Killemngrillem8, if you are comfortable enough with your rig on the trail, you can run the breakfast run on Thursday, it's your choice. Most of the guys on that run are SWB with few wagons like Doug and a few others. But they've done that trail numerous times and are comfortable enough to keep up with the SWB...

The wagon run that takes off Wednesday is the best run for a wagon.

I'm not an expert on this. It's just my opinion. I had a blast last year, and it was just an item on my bucket list that I could've just crossed out after running it. But here I am again, repeat.

The folks are great... Putting names on mud handle and meeting veterans and newbie like me is priceless. I had a leak in my rear axle and as soon as the drunkards saw my truck on the hi lift jack, they all surrounded me and offered help!
Camaraderie at is best!

Also, Ice house resort has cabins if you get early enough to book yourself a room.

See you on the trail!

Oh and @Bad Coco , we've got your email on the switch from 100 to our 60 series.

Thanks for the help!

Early on this thread, I've posted that we had a Hundy that we've worked on to get on the Rubithon. We've finished, registered, but unfortunately, it was rear ended, well, side swiped hit and run. Rear axle is bent and won't make it in time.

So we're taking the 60 in lieu of the hundy, and my 80 as well.

Thanks again Eric...

@Bad Coco Eric Thank you for the quick reply and information. It sounds like leaving my truck and trailer at Icehouse would work fine and I'll just stay the night there somewhere. My Cruiser is pretty road worthy so I will hopefully be able to drive it back around to Icehouse at the conclusion. I left my truck at the Loon Lake campground last time and just drove back to it. I won't be getting dow there until later wednesday so I will be a bit pressed for time. I am not really familiar with who goes on what runs aside from the run titled "wagon run" so jus too clarify there won't be a lot of FJ40's on the breakfast run? I have a 74 FJ40 on 35's front and rear lockers full skids rock sliders winch etc etc. @pilotuku Thank you for the reply and thats good to hear that you were in the same boat last year puts me at ease a bit. Maybe I messed up by just putting that I have an FJ in my original post but to clarify I have a FJ40 so I am hoping to be able to keep up with the other SWB guys. I'll attach a pic here and maybe that will help determine if I should do the breakfast run or not??? Thank you again guys I appreciate it!

When someone specifies that their "cruiser" is a FJ then I guess it is assumed that it is a FJ Cruiser. All the early "FJ"s have a number associated with the model such as 40, 45, 55, 60,62, 80, etc. Even later "FZJ"s and UZJ's and all the HJ's, etc. have numbers in their moniker. The poor FJ cruiser folks don't get a number so they are just "FJ"s, or "FJC"s. Clear as mud?

That will be fine for the breakfast run. LIke Doug said above, when people say FJ, most everyone thinks of the newer "FJ" as in the FJCruiser. That rig is beautiful. The guys on the breakfast run are top notch and you will have a blast with them!

Take your dad. He isn't going to be around forever. I'd give anything for such an opportunity. :crybaby:

@PabloVTA Thank you I can't take credit for the build (wish I could) Just take credit for signing the check! A really great guy built it who used to run the Rubithon all the time. @Devil's Slide Doug absolutely clear as mud!! I should have realized that I needed to be specific when there are so many varieties! Bear with me I'm still popping the cherry!! @Bad Coco Thank you and good talking with you tonight look forward to meeting you in person! @Fast Eddy very true and something that weighs heavily on my mind. I guess I shouldn't let the little things stand in the way of a huge memory and probably once in a lifetime experience for he and I. I appreciate all the input guys thank you and look forward to meeting and seeing you there.

My lovely wife is willing to go to Ireland in September so we can make the Rubithon in June. It doesn't get much better.
Hey Dick, This is Brian Barrington from Auburn. Looking forward to catching up this year. I'll be headed into the springs on the Thursday Breakfast run with my kids Brody and Brooklyn. Glad you and the wife will be there this year!
