The 80w90 is very easy/cheap to get in 5-gallon buckets out here in (very hot) Virginia. Will this cause any issues on a 200 series? My '76 already uses this so I'm hoping this will work for both...

75W90 is recommended in very hot Oman and Saudi’s Arabia. I’d stick with what’s recommended.

I run 75W-85 per Toyota spec. Yep, it's been hot in Virginia. Wish I was headed to Cruisers on the Rockies in CO.

Your transfer case specifies a straight 75w and 200-series started doing so at the same time the TC part number was changed, with the parts diagrams suggesting some internal differences.

GL5 fluids are known to attack yellow metals commonly used in synchromesh assemblies and that could easily explain Toyota specifying a GL4 for your Tcase.

Our diffs don’t seem to be very picky about the fluids, but I generally recommend staying with something that meets Toyotas standards for the TC. Ravenol, redline, and others make fluids that are easier to source and much cheaper than the OE Toyota stuff.

Other people don’t bother but IMO the transfer case is too expensive and the exact reasons for the odd spec being unknown point to it being a risk.

A lot more discussion on the topic here:

^^ yep, for Transfer case you want straight 75W. I replaced with the Toyota unicorn fluid the first time. Now using Ravenol 75W and will continue to do so in future.

It's an open diff with no clutch pack. I would use what you want, as it's not a high tech gear box. I use the Valvoline 75W-90 in the squeeze packs now.

I am talking about the axle diffs here. Not the transfer case. In the T case, I use the Ravenol TC oil.

I think Redline makes an equivalent product that people like as well.

Another Ravenol user here... just ordered their full diff/TC kit
